IH 1420 question

been using a gas 715 combine also just got an oliver 7300 but was thinking of going to something with better parts availability. I have seen a few IH 1420 combines around and it looks like the right size. But I
was I need to know how tall it is. the 715 will go in the barn with 2-4 inches to spare but it is close. how tall is a 1420

Our 1440 would fit thru a 12'6" door with no farmer added extras. You may have to go measure that combine to know for sure. They may have added extensions to the hopper or even larger tires.

Have the seller measure if it is far away.

If you are wanting good parts availability then the 1420 is not the way to go. A number of the rotor/cage parts are different than the larger combines for starters and the engine is different than a 1440 or a 1460. Don't get me wrong the 1420 is a good combine but if you want good parts support and a final drive that will stand up to mud then get the 1460. A good 1420 sold last year at auction for 1800 dollars with an 843 head so that indicates a certain level of concern even though this was in the heart of small farm (Mennonite) country. Should have bought it as a friend needed the German diesel engine out of it.

well the 715 I use now belongs to a friend I have an oliver 7300 gas combine but most parts for everything but then engine (gas chrysler 318) is unavailable. I need a machine that is inexpensive and can fund a 4 row narrow head. most of the fields will be 2-8 acres in size and tucked back behind houses a big machine can't get to. It doesn't have to be red but seems like i can buy red equipment cheaper than green and its just as good. but I would like a combine that can run a 4 row head and has good parts availability. what models would you suggest?

Some place I have an Implement and Tractor Red Book from 1982 that would have helped give dimensions although width and height will be affected by drive tire size which can vary. I don't know what your specific budget would be but if you are thinking a 1420 I do not think a 1440 varies too much in the outside dimensions plus as far as I know does not have parts availability issues like the 1420. Gleaners were good combines at reasonable prices but parts availability will vary by model. Maybe a 4400 Deere as quite a bit of hardware can still be found at salvage yards if not new. A little less capacity than a 1420 in my opinion but quite a few were sold new back in the day. A 4400 would be a medium capacity 4 row machine or 12-13 foot table for beans.
