IH 1486 hard to start

I have a 1486 that is hard to start after setting awhile. When I do get it cranked it is slugish and smokes white. Rev the engine up it quits smoking and runs fine. After running it for a while it will start fine. Have had the injector pump rebuilt and injectors redun.

Do you have a lift pump that brings fuel frpm the tank to the high injection pump? It may have a faulty check valve and it"s not able to prime or it"s not working.

The very first thing I check when I get a hard starter is the battery connections. A diesel has to spin a fair speed to start correctly. If battery is weak or bad connection or the starter is weak they will be slugish as you described.

The white smoke may or may not elude to a problem. If it is not caused by normal cold starting condensation/cold cylinders, then you may have a water leak that is sealed off once the engine gets hot and things expand.

Might ease the engine oil drain plug out enough to check for water/antifreeze in the oil after the engine has been off over night or longer if you can.

If ok, then go after the other things stated. Might have your battery/batteries checked for cranking amperage. I think you need about 200 rpm's to get a diesel to light off.

Lastly I assume your 1486 is diesel and being a compression engine you need adequate heat to explode the fuel generated by engine cranking compression. If your rings are worn they may not show up as blue (oil burning smoke) but may still be bad enough to cause hard starting of a cold engine. Warming of the engine would improve compression because of piston/ring expansion which would fit right in with your senario and could be a cause.

sounds like your fuel is bleeding back. try before you start it after sitting to pump the hand primmer if it gets easy on the second pump keep pumping till it gets hard. if it starts good thats the problem. you can try filling the fuel tank or find the leak.
Good luck Ed
