IH 1486 Rear end?

I went and looked at a 1486 with some transmission issues. The tractor would get stuck in high range and could not move the lever out. It also needs a clutch so maybe that will solve that issue. Do these tractors have differential issues? I jacked up the rear of the tractor and spun one wheel and expected the other wheel to turn the opposite direction, but no movement. Also had a lot of filings in the filter screen and in the speed trans when i drained a little out. When i drained oil out, it was really dark with a burnt clutch smell. They said the smoked the PTO clutch last fall, so i was going to pull it and check the clutches. They also thought that the T/A wasn't acting right, so I'm going to check pressures. Basically a lot going on with this tractor.

I would walk away from that tractor with roller skates well lubed. If given the tractor's basic neglect and the amount of work known to be needed, were an indicator, a full restore would be needed. I know it is a desirable big horse, but it would need to be given to you to be worth it, you would need to want it as a year long project, and you would not get paid to put time into it. If a brake was frozen, the diff might not allow the wheel motion expected, but there are 10 other reasons the other tire might not turn reverse, like a differential lock. Ask your self, why do I want it? Jim

Well sonny i see your in for a real Education on the finer art of tractor repair . I can tell you first hand that by the time your done you will have exceeded the price you paid for it in parts as here is what you will find , (1) clutch and pressure plate , (2)new IDPTO inputshaft, (3) some new gears in the speed transmission and maybe BOTH shafts and bearings ,(4)a reman T/A a new MCV pump , a rebuild kit for the MCV , (5) some new shift rollers and a spring of two , (6) a complete Diff carrier and gears , new bearings and hope and pray ya don't need a new ring and pinion , (7) brake parts . Now depending on year will tell what hyd. system it has , if it is and early one it is the same as what the 1066-1466 had and open center if it has the PFC son your on your own here as i do not have the stuff to test that system so i stay away from it as they had problems and ya need the factory annilizer (sp) to even test it . There is no need to try and get fancy hooking up gauges to see what the T/A is doing as here again you do not have the proper test spool to run the test . Now as to why she locks up in High Well that could be a couple of things . It could be in the range trans cover , it could be in the shifter linkage, it could be caused by Cab settling due to cab mount compression from age . . Those metal filings are coming from the Carrier failure caused fro0m hard braking while turning under heavy load and usen the brakes. . Tried telling a friend not to do this while disking but he kept on doing the hard turning at the head lands with the disc in the dirt . As the only way you can get something thru his thick head is thru his Piggy bank and after he had to lay out the bucks to fix his self inflicted gun shot wound to the foot he now lifts the disk at the end of the field and makes the trun instead of standing on the brakes as this is hard on the side gears and pinions and shaft. .

Dont kid yourself, owner probably knows more than he telling you. I am guessing he has rough idea on cost of repairs. I dont agree with lot of stuff on here, but run away from that money pit! Faster the better

By looking at his other posts it looks like he is a tractor mechanic for hire of sorts. Sure has a large bunch and variety of tractors if all the ones he has posted about are his. He doesn’t state he is looking to buy; maybe he is, but he will have to clarify that if he feels the need. Regardless if it his tractor or a customer’s it does sound like it has potential to run up a big bill for an older tractor. IMHO

I suspect that if you put that tractor on a dyno, it would be pushing 180HP, 200HP, maybe more out at the PTO, and this is what happens to 1486's that have had the fuel cranked up like that.

I agree, it's pretty well thrashed and probably not worth fixing from a financial perspective. For sure there's no meat on the bone there as far as flipping it even if you do all the work yourself.
