IH 1600 Two Speed

My IH 1600 Loadstar truck sat for a couple years before I sent it to the shop for repairs, before it left here the 2 speed worked perfect, but now something isn't right with it, if I am in High range and push the button down for Low range the amp gauge goes in the negative a good ways and the fuse will blow. If i leave it in High range everything is fine, I checked the wires and could not find anything bad, I tried another 2 speed switch at the gear shift but that did not help any. Normally with just the key switch on you can hear it changing back at the rear axle but now I can't hear a thing. Anyone on here ever seen this before?? Only thing left to check is the 2 speed itself I'm thinking?

Did you look at the wires along the frame where they pass the clutch and transmission where they could have been damaged by the work done to replace the clutch as I suggested in the other post? Should be able to follow them forward from the axle to check for damage. Otherwise the motor may have just decided to give up and is shorting. The cut out switch may also be grounding. Fairly easy units to work on if the small metal screws haven’t seized into the aluminum housing. Two or three bolts or nuts hold it to the rear axle, take them loose and it slides off. Just have to make sure it engages in the shift fork properly when you put it back on.

There is a switch on the unit at the rear axle that opens after it shifts to shut off the motor. These often stick or go bad. It is not hard remove the unit and fix or replace. They used to sell rebuild kits with parts and gaskets.

Disconnect the wires at the motor and shift it. If the fuse does not blow, the problem is in the motor assembly. Mark.
