How much Trans/Hy.fluid is needed to fill rear Trans Housing. Had to repair rear end, was leaking before repairs. Found where you pour fluid into rear-end (behind seat on right side)Can't find measurement devise either to check fluid level. Working on this tractor for friend.
Thanks Larry.

There will be a check plug somewhere on the transmission/rearend case, about half way up.If like a SuperC,the plug will be at the right rear corner.

Larry, I have a Farmall (row crop model) 240 s/n 13xx with the IH 2 point fast hitch. I looked at my tractor for the level and drain plugs and think I can lead you to them. First, the drain plug is a recessed square plug atn the lowest point of the differential/transmission or what IH calls the rear frame casting. It is only accessible from the underside and can't be seen without being or feeling under the tractor. Guessing the recess is most likely 1/2" square in size. The check plug is on the right hand side (looking toward the front of the tractor) on the very back edge of the same large casting as the drain plug. It is located in height about on the centerline as the tractor axle. Since I have a fast hitch on my tractor you can't see this plug on my tractor but there is a drilled hole in a fast hitch component in line with the plug for access. I believe it has an Allen recess head for removing and inserting back in place in the casting.
I have the original Operator's Manual for my tractor which states the total quantity of fluid required for the transmission is five gallons unless it isn't equipped with PTO and belt pulley in which case it would be 4 3/4 gallons. In this original manual it calls out various lubricants and additives which are no longer available, various engine oils and other fluids along with SAE 80W and 90W gear lubricants. I use the 90W in my Farmall 240 as it isn't subjected to working temperatures below +40F. In a later IH publication (Preventive Maintenance Manual) for the 240 tractors following the introduction of IH Hy-Tran Fluid it only notes Hy-Tran as a transmission lubricant and in the same quantities as noted above. So you have a choice of what to use for a lubricant at this time and the reason I use the 90W gear lubricant as I feel it won't find a leak path as easily as Hy-Tran, the operating temperature the tractor is exposed too and I think it also reduces gear clash when shifting the transmission as the higher viscosity lubricant slows the transmission components when the clutch is depressed quicker then Hy-Tran.
Hope this helps in servicing this 240 tractor you are working on and if additional information is required my email is opened through this forum, Hal.

Hal you have saved the day!!Thanks for super information, I did find fluid level plug, was where you said it was, I did not removed it yet. We guessed at 4 gallon early on as we thought not to go over main drive gears when we filling Trans.
I called local CIH people in area and they just said DA!DA! would call when they found information. This tractor is neighbors they broke pto housing some gears, bearing's somehow, got parts from Bates Corp. Will say they are good,
Was up to Elnora IN. show last week, asked several people if they new about/used YT, I don't think I found one that did. JIcase was feature brand for this show, lot to see, was good.
