I have just acquired a running IH 300u that is LP instead of gas. I heard they existed but never seen 1. Now I'm wondering how many were made. Anyone know?

Hello aa3px, welcome to YT! According to Tractordata There were 30,851 IH 300 utilities built the two years they were made 1955 and 1956, see link under production. IH 300 utility on Tractordata As far as I know there are no remaining records of a breakdown of numbers of each engine type built. There were definitely not as many propane models as were gasoline. Say a sixth of the production were propane models, that would mean about 5000 LPG were built. I suppose you can call that rare if you want I wouldn’t. We’ll see what happens, some of these old IH guys have quite the stacks of IH paperwork to dig through.

Alot fewer than that. Probably around 300 built or even less.
Curious if you have any reference for the number you gave? I obviously don’t for what I said, it was just a guesstimate. I know Guy Faye’s book gives a lot of info on these sorts of things but I have never read it.

The real numbers aren't known for 300 lp utilities but the 350 lp utility number is known and that is 202. The 460 lp utility number is around 250.(one year production is missing for them but if you prorate it out, you can get pretty close). These numbers are right from the IH Archives in Wis.
