got my 3444 running -now the generator is kaput. Can I 1) put in a 12 volt alternator ( one wire )? 2) is rotation direction important ? 3) how exact;y do I wire it up ? go right through voltage regulator ? no light or other stuff to worry about. might it be my regulator that is kaput not genny ? thanks dave

If you install a one wire alternator it is internally regulated. Most doing this run the one wire from the alternator to the ammeter. You should remove the old generator wiring and its voltage regulator.

I used to have a 3444 gas. I wish I could recall the charging system but I can't. It's one part of the machine which never bothered! If I'm remembering correctly it had the same instrument cluster as the domestic farm tractors of that period. In other words a fuel and temp gauge, and charge and oil pressure lights. Is that correct? If you go with the alternator you'll want to do as Jim says and remove all of the old stuff. I would run the alternator wire to the starter solenoid terminal. And I would probably put the proper size circuit breaker in that line.
