IH 350 U Carb issue?

Good Afternoon, First time poster, I have looked through the forum for IH carb issues and i cannot seem to find a situation like I have. Any help or advice would be appreciative. I have a 1957 IH 350 Utility. I have owned it for five years now, every year it has run well with no issues. Last year I only ran the tractor a handful of times. Here is my problem. This year I am getting it ready, removed the old gas with new, installed the battery. It runs like it should. I start to drive the tractor up a hill and it feels like its not getting enough gas. It lurches or chugs until I turn the tractor to go down the hill it is ok. but about another two minutes the idle gets rough then it stalls. I can wait about five minutes start the tractor, and it runs fine again. but five minutes of running the idle gets rough until it stalls. This is what I have done so far:
-- checked the battery it was below 12V, (by the way its a positive ground)
-- took the generator to get tested, it does charge
-- purchased a new voltage regulator, installed, and polarized
-- drained the gas tank and added new gas with seafoam additive.
-- removed the sediment bowl cleaned out and installed new wire filter.
-- Removed fuel line from carburetor. (its a copper tube. Is that the normal fuel line for a tractor?)
I found a tube of wire mesh in the fuel line right at the fuel line connection to carb. Its the same type of mesh that is in the sediment bowl below the fuel tank just rolled up to fit in the fuel line. I removed it thinking that was the culprit. Turned the tractor on I still have my issue.

I think my issue is the tractor is not getting enough fuel. I think the tractor is using the fuel in the carburetor bowl but not getting fuel fast enough from the fuel tank too fill the bowl back up. I read through the forums and adjusted the carb to "normal" but I think I need to remove and clean the carburetor. Any thoughts?

Check for a good steady flow of gas when you remove the drain from the bottom of the carb. It does sound like the carb may need to be cleaned and it can't hurt to get it cleaned out good.

If everything in the carb checks out you may have something inside the tank blocking the flow to the sediment bowl, I have had this happen before on older tractors. You may need to clean the tank out well if this is the case. My 300 utility had this problem when I first good it. Acting the same way you describe and I finally had to pull the tank and clean it out.

There is a small screen in the fitting at the carb. it gets partially plugged and only passes enough fuel to run for a
while. Remove the line at the carb to find it. The tank may have flakes plugging the outlet when going up hill, but it is
more likely that the engine is using more fuel going up, and the tank outlet on that model is kinda so it usually doesn't do
that. Sometimes it is necessary to drain the tank through the hole where the sediment bowl screws in to get it clean enough
to be reliable. Filtering the fuel through a coffee filter will allow it to be put back in. Jim

+1, I have had the top of the sediment
bowl (the little protruding nib ABOVE the
threads) get clogged with rust flakes on
both 300u and 350u. There is a screen
available for this, but my cheapskate
solution has been two part. On the 350u I
unscrew the bowl every couple of years
and flush the tank+ clean the inlet to
the bowl. On the 300u I found a short
(2")section of copper tube which was just
the right size to force into the sediment
bowl inlet. Using a fine tooth hacksaw I
cut 8-10 slots part way through the tube.
This has worked for years. One day the
tube will fall out and I will post on
here, then Jim will remind me about it!

Thanks for the replies, I will get a chance this weekend to remove the sediment bowl and drain the fuel tank and remove. Ill let yall know what I find. thanks again for the advice.

Thank you all for your assistance. I siphoned the fuel out of the tank and into an empty fuel can, removed the fuel line from the sediment bowl. That was kind of difficult as it was in-between the fuel tank and power steering housing. I removed the sediment bowl top from the bottom of the fuel tank and in the hole going to the bowl was what looked like bug parts. A thorax or bug body segments. That was clogging the tube. Once I removed the clog and cleaned up the part I flushed out the tank a couple times, I then installed the sediment bowl and reinstalled the fuel line. She started right up and I was able to finish mowing the 8 acres Saturday. I wonder if there is a pre-filter screen I can install in the fuel neck to prevent any other critters from getting in? Thank you again for your time and help.

You can get one of these that press into the inlet of the Sediment bowl and goes up int the tank to help keep crap like that from blocking the flow of fuel.
