IH 384 transmission problems.

Looking for a little help, My IH 384 wants to stall out when releasing the clutch in any forward gear but will do reverse as normal. it is a 2 stage clutch and the second stage (PTO) works as normal too. Not sure if this is a clutch issue or a gearbox linkage issue.

It seems like it is possibly stuck in two gears at once. My H did this and that was the problem. Does it come out of reverse OK? If you put it in "neutral," does want to move? Dave

The shift mechanism is the fault. it could be the shift rails are misaligned from the shifter tip slipping out of place, or it could be a shift fork out of
place/broken. Take the shift lever out and look for issues. I bet it goes in backwards when in neutral. Jim

hanks for your reply, will check that out, cant remember right now what it did in neutral. was able to tow with clutch depressed. if it is engaged in two gears at once, that must mean problems with the linkage, correct ?

hanks for your reply. Do you mean you bet it goes in reverse when in neutral ? I will check on saturday, open up the top of gearbox and get a look at it.

I would think so. I am not familiar with the 384, but assuming it has a sliding gear transmission, the shifter forks should have detents on them to keep them in place. These are just ball bearings on springs that "click" into grooves on the shifter rails.

On my H, the R/1 shifter fork would slide back into "R" when going up hill. Getting it back out of gear was hard to do as the tip of the shift lever was not in the shifter fork groove. Trying to put it in forward gear would stall it, as the transmission was trying to go both directions at once. I am glad I did not break any gears. Removal of the top cover showed that the springs were rusted and broken. I replaced all 4 of them with new ones. New balls, too. Problem has not returned.

As JANicholson wrote, I would guess the tractor is stuck in reverse. On the H you can remove the shift lever and look down at the top of the shift forks. You'll see which one is in the wrong place. You can reach down there with a screwdriver and slide it back, but the problem will only return until it is fixed.

BE CAREFUL when starting as even if it is in "neutral" it may want to move. Be sure someone is in the seat, with a foot on the clutch.

Good luck, Dave

Being able to move it is a sure sign it is stuck in reverse. The fault is likely the shift mechanism. This shows the linkage. the slots in the rails
need to be all lined up. The tip of the shift lever is likely worn and can be built back to normal size. Jim

Hi, it is not easy to remove transmission cover on a 384, you have to lift the hydraulic housing/reservoir a few inches to get the transmission cover off.
Maybe by putting the gear shift lever in reverse a wiggling it about you can get it out of reverse.
See the B414 Trans link below this mechanic has several videos on this style of IH British Bradford, UK built tractors, the 414,434,444 and 384 are basically the same engine/trans/diff/hydraulics with some
improvements through the years.

From the Classic View option of this site, use the [Send Email] in the bottom right of message box to send me an email with your email address and I will email you a service manual for 384.

thank you, also for the heads up about starting. I often start the tractor while standing beside it so it can warm up. Will climb into the seat for sure first now..

That diagram is almost identical to the H. Take out pin 15 and you should be able to look down and see the top of the shifter rails. The rails should "click" into gear as the springs and detent balls snap into the little grooves cut in the top of the rails. I built up the tip of my shift lever with weld, but that alone was no enough to do it as I also had broken detent springs. Note some of the rails have more than one detent ball and spring. One may be broken and the other fine--so it may click into one gear, but not the other on the same rail. Dave
