IH 424 Diesel Glow Plug Problems

This is in continuation of a couple of posts I placed on another persons thread, and decided to make my own thread to not further hijack his. I will repost the prior information so its all in one place. ........

We just bought a 424 Deisel and it runs great.......when you get it started! You have to hold down on the starter button and allow the engine to turn over for 60-90 seconds before it starts. The whole time it turns over it doesn't even hit....if it does it is very little. Once it hits, it spits and sputter just a little bit and starts up. WHile running it runs Perfect like a new tractor would until you shut the fuel off.

Right now the tractor is stripped down and has just been re-painted. We are about to change the filters and fluids, so I'd like to fix the starting problem. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT IS WRONG!?!???

Hi, you must use the glow plugs to start the BD-
154 British Diesel for the first start of the
day.For the first start of the day, in warmer
climates it will start by just cranking the engine
for a a period of time but not good for the
starter. If engine and injection pump are working
properly, for the fist start of the day the glow
plugs must be used but after engine has warmed up
it should start without glow plugs.
Note: The glow plugs are wired in series and if
one burns out they all stop working.
There should be a glow plug push button and glow
plug meter on the dash.

While I have the tractor torn apart, I want to fix it right. All of the wiring seems to be original and in good condition. It doesn't look like it was ever tampered with....with the exception of the key switch that someone has jumped (wired the wires together). I had an original key and it turns smoothly, so hopefully that is all that it needed (a key). The push button and the thing on the left side (with holes in it) is all there and intact, so I would presume it would work. However I did notice that the glow plug closest to the radiator is "broken" away from the metal wires that it is connected to.

I need some assistance when it comes to this since I'm a gas type trac tor guy THANKS

Fix the glow plugs.

Hi, I am not familiar with the 424 as it was a
British build B414D that was shipped to USA as a
chassis with engine and transmission. The Delco
Remey electrical system, front end, steering
assembly and skin was added using USA parts. On
the B414 Diesel that were sold in Canada the key
switch only enabled the charging system. I looked
at the electrical diagram on caseih.com for the
424 and it would appear the key switch has the
same function and there are two push button
switches on the dash, one for the starter and the
other for the glow plugs. The glow plug indicator
is on the dash with the holes in it, like an old
fashion pepper shaker top. The glow plug indicator
is actually a resistor and will glow when the glow
plugs are hot enough to start the tractor.
Although in warmer climates the indicator does not
have to glow for the tractor to start.
The glow plugs are wired in series, so if one
burns out they all stop working. I would suggest
that if one glow plug is bad that all 4 glow plugs
be replaced. Take notice of the wiring of the glow
plugs before removing them. The over under wiring
sequence must be correct to keep the glow plugs in
series. If they are wired in-correctly they will
burn out the first time they are used.

Solved the problem of the Key Switch! It appears that the previous owner didn't have the key for the tractor, so they bypassed the switch by wiring the wires together. I happened to have an original IH key switch key. I tried it after hooking the switch back up, and it works perfectly. All I gotta do is go and get some extra keys made for it now.

As for the glow plug problem.....here are some pictures of what I found today. Hopefully you can see exactly what I'm talking about it being broken off with the new paint and all. I apologize if its hard to see. It doesn't look like the others either, so maybe that's a clue. It is the glow plug to the far left I am talking about.

The wiring looks correct as you can see starting from fuel tank side the black wire from dash glow plug indicator is on outside connector then copper wire goes next block then next copper wire on outside, next wire on block side and final wire from outside to ground bolt on block.

What is the deal with the bolt on the 1st glow plug. The others don't have that. Is that supposed to be there?? If not, what is? When I buy a glow plug(s), do they come with everything I will need?
