IH 434 Glowplugs

Does anyone have a picture of the hookups on IH 434 glowplugs?
They seem to have a ground and a hot wire to each one?
I get power at the plug but it doesnt seem to make the GP work?
On the front 2 there is a connection to a ground.

Hi Ken, the glow plugs are wired in series like the old xmas tree lights, if one blows out they all don't work. There is an insulator on each glow plug separating the two wires. The hot wire is black wire at battery end and is on top of insulator on glow plug, next is copper wire from under insulator to under insulator on next glow plug, next is top of insulator to top of next glow plug, then under insulator to under insulator of next glow plug and last glow plug top of insulator to ground on engine.

You have to use a meter or some circuit tester to find the burned out one. DO NOT PUT 12V across the glow plug or it will burn out.
The other problem that happens is the indicator element on the dash burns out and since it is in series as well the glow plugs don't work.

Hope this helps

The glow plugs are in SERIES. The power comes from the glow plug resistor on the dash to the rear most glow plug and then to the next glow plow and the next and finally to the front most glow plug and the to the ground connection.
The Caseih website has a basic wiring diagram in the online parts catalog for the 434.
Hooking up the glow plugs anyway but serially will burn out the heater elements in the plugs.
You probably should check the plugs to verify they are still good. When hooked up correctly if one glow plug fails none of the plugs will heat up due to the fact they are connected in series.

hope this helps

Those glow plugs are easy to check just by pulling them out and looking at them - since they have have exposed heating coils. If broken, you'll see it.

You say not to put 12 volt to them?
The tractor has a 12 volt battery?
I think i understand about the series deal.
Someone has been messing around with these already I think.

Tractor has a 12 volt system. The battery is 12 volts, the starter cranks at 9 - 10 volts, and the glow plugs run at 9/10ths of a volt each at 36 watts.

It has five glow plugs, all hooked in series with a lot of circuit resistance - that's why total working voltage is only around one volt, not twelve.

Ken, the indicator on the dash has the same function as a glow plug. Therefore 5 glow plugs in series. So when you activate the glow plugs the battery voltage will be drawn down to about 10 volts. So 10 volts divided by 5 glow plugs equals about 2 volts at each glow plug since they are in series. If someone has put 12V on a glow plug it will vapourize quickly. Ever plugged a 110V light buld into a 220V circuit?
If you know how to use an ohm meter then the glow plugs are easily check because they show either open or close to a short ( 1 or 2 Ohms).
