The 434 drives good going straight but when turning, a noise in the rear end sounds like the axle is shifting or sliding somewhat. What else could that noise be if not the axle?

It could be the bolts to wheel weights or the rim to the disc or cast center depending on which you have and of course the casting on the axles shaft if it has that. If none of these then probably axle or could be a bad wheel bearing in a front wheel. Could also be the spider gears in the rear end. Though I would doubt you could hear them in the cast housing like that unless they were really bad.
