IH 45 baler knotter problem

I will get ahold of Baler man and see if he can help me as well. I appreciate the advice you all have given me I at least have a start now as to where I’m going to start hunting for a problem. It almost looked like the side that was missing wasn’t crimping the twine in the disc as tight so I’m wondering if I have a warped disc like you guys said. I will try to get back at it once I get a free few hours from work and let you guys know how it goes!
When you talk to that guy he may want to know if there is enough twine to encircle the bale, or enough to make a manual tie. there are two different failures that fall under the heading of, "simple knot in needle twine ".
Take note of any oddities when the miss occurs, like twine wound around the bill hook. Will make his trouble shooting much easier.

I will watch it miss a knot again and take note of anything that looks odd thank you for all your help

Re needles, way back in the late 1950s, I rode on the twine box and tied the missed bales on Dad's IH 45 baler. The inside knotter never missed a bale but the outside one would miss 2 or 3 in 50 bales. I noticed the outside needle was not placing the twine in the twine holder perfectly. After many days I convinced Dad to turn the baler over by hand and compare to needle placement of the twine in the twine holder. We adjusted the outside needle to match the inside needle and that fixed the problem, no more riding on twine box in the dust.

The upgrade kit as shown in the youtube video was a great improvement, just the spring clip that went under the twine knife and behind the twine disk was a great improvement. The twine knife with the razor blade was a great improvement in reducing the frequency of sharpening the twine knife.
Todays sisal twine is not as good quality as it was back when those balers were made, there are more thick and thin places in the twine and the IH knotters do not like the thin places as it will slip out of the twine disk and cause a problem like you describe, single knot on twine and twine is not long enough to go around the bale.

Good luck

It looks like I have some looking at the needle position in my future. Can you explain what this upgrade kit does. I found pictures of it on balermans website but can’t quite wrap my head around what it does by just the pictures

Search through the videos on his YT channel. There's quite a few pertaining to that kit & he explains what hey do in a few on them.

The videos below may be of some help too, though they explain more of the function of the knotter.

You'll note the first baler shown in the last video is a 45, all set to get blown to pieces.
