IH 454 gas distributor

Hello all. I just bought an international 454 gas. I found that the rear screw in the distributor cap is stripped out. It would not start after pressure washing it and I found that the cap is not held on very securely.

This is a Delco 1112477 dist. Information I have found online suggests that this should have a Prestolite dist.

I am awaiting a set of manuals to arrive.

In any event, are there different distributors that can be used on this model? Could I helicoil this screw hole?

Is there a procedure for removing the distributor so I get the teeth matched correctly when I put this or another back in?

Thank you.

I did find this distributor on this site. It does list a 454 as applicable. Does anyone know if it will work?
Thank you.

With the number one piston on TDC (top dead center) rotor aligned with the number one plug you should then be able to pull the distributor out and put back in with no ill effects. Just have to have the rotor aligned the same place as it was for one. Take a picture if unsure before disassembly.

Forgot to say just use a slightly larger screw for the cap spring. Not sure what size they are trying to use a helicoil on a cap bracket screw would be pretty hard to get in on that job. Using a self tapping screw would probably work easiest on that.

caterpillar guy, thank you.
This cap screws down with two screws. It does not have the snap springs that come up from the sides. I'll use your instructions to pull the dist this week. I rarely deal with gas ign systems as most of what I have is diesel.
Thx

I would get and use a Helicoil kit. I think that screw is a 10-32. I have Helicoiled a lot screws in distributors over the yeasrs. The kit may cost you around $45 but a lot cheaper than a new distributor. Plus with a Helicoil it will be just like original.

No. That distributor will not work. You have a delco remy distributor with a slot instead of a gear drive.

Pressure washing would not change the timing. However it would drive moisture up under the distributor cap and engines won't run when the ignition is "wet." If you simply dried out the ignition it would probably start even with the loose screw.

This is one of the many uses of WD-40, but a heat gun would work equally well.

Simple, cheap, simple, and effective. 10-32 is the helicoil size for the Delco 454 distributor. Worked like a charm. Thank you!
