IH 46 baler needle brake problem

Was out baling last night with a IH 46 baler and at the end of the night the needles started cycling non stop. Was getting dark so didn't look it over real close yet but was wondering what would cause the needles to cycle over and over causing the bill hooks to ball up with knot after knot. I did try to increase the spring tension on the needle brake.

When it trips from the star wheel,does the arm that rides up drop back down or is it staying up causing your condition?

needles cycling too often is normally something not disengaging trip dog. I'm not familiar with IHC baler but on JD it's the linkage associated with measuring wheel linkage that suppose to disengage dog when needles are in homme position.

We had to replace the roller(that rides on the knotter cast on the trip linkage) on a 47. I don't recall why, some reason I think it was the same problem. We also found the high point on the knotter cast was worn to low, so we set a screw in it. Seems to work fine now. Might also check the spring that resets the measure linkage(hook/slider thingy) and the trip its hooked to.

I hope you didn't tighten the break more then a 1/2 flat or two of the nut(1/16-1/8turn barely),yes that's one part that is that picky. To tight it don't turn fast enough to get twine up, to loose the needles are back before knotters grab string properly.

yes, the knotter trip mechanism has broke. Try to turn the baler by hand to figure out what broke and why it is not resetting.
