Is this an easy starting reliable tractor? I was looking at one with a loader and want to know of any weaknesses besides the normal to check for. Will this handle 6X5 round bales?

I don't think it will handle 5X6 bales. I had a 674 and it was iffy with big bales. If I stopped too quick, it would lift the rear wheels off the ground.

D179 diesel starts easy, would not want 1300 lb bales on that size of tractor, especially if it's swept back axle.

Hi Bud, my brother has 454 and 495 with D-179, very good starting. The 454 has ether assist starting aid. The 495 has the intake manifold preheater. Ignoring my advice he put an IH 2350 Quick-Attach loader on his 495 with calcium loaded rear tires. At the time he had a 4x4 round baler. In fall and spring we have muddy conditions to feed round bales. Well within 3 years he had broke lots of things on the swept back front axle. Problem with swept back axle with 2350 loader is loader hangs too far over the front axle. He then bought a 5x4 round baler and decided it was time to move the 2350 loader on to his CIH 3230 and has had no problem with front end on 3230.
The CIH 3230 is a newer version of the next size up from 464, it is similar to 474,574,584,595. It has D-206 4 cyl engine with straight front axle.
So I don't recommend the 464 with swept back front axle with front end loader to lift 1300# bales. They are a very handy tractor otherwise the swept back axle gives a very short turning radius.

Bud, it all depends on how far the loader bucket sticks out beyond the front of tractor. The problem with IH 2350 loader was it was made to fit many tractors from 3 cyl to 6 cyl. Since the mount point was on torque tube on the shorter block 3 cyl the loader hung over the front more than on a 4 cyl or 6 cyl.
