I just bought a 5088 that the owner says would not go into reverse anymore and they unhooked the shifter. I know nothing about these tractors im a ford person but it was cheap. Runs great other wise. I see on range there is high low reverse and is the other one a middle range? The console is all busted. Next what could be a typical problem with why it wont go in reverse. Hoping it would be something simple but i dont even know where to start. And last whats the dos and donts with these tractors. What to watch and look out for ect. The pto also doesn’t shut off is there a brake internally. And how to go about fixing that.

You may need some knowledge of the Sentry system unless it's been bypassed.

I think it may have been Binder Planet where they had Sentry trouble and what to do about it. The modules were long discontinued and someone had found a way around that.

If forward gears all work then I would guess the shift fork has failed. Under the cab on the left side above the auxiliary fuel tank you can see the linkage. Have someone, with engine off, move the shift linkage and watch if everything is moving. If the shaft going into the range transmission is twisting back and forth from low to reverse than it is going to be internal, provided the shaft is twisting far enough. To make sure you can unhook the linkage turn buckle and shift by hand and see what happens

So what i have found out so far is they broke the bolt for the range shifter on the pivot point. How exactly does that linkage come out so i can get the broken bolt out. And I found that it slips in low range wont even move hardly going down hill

remove the seat and the platform under the seat and the control center foot plate. This will expose all your linkage. Under the foot platform you will see two electrical switches in the center of the transmission. Get a hydraulic gauge and next to each switch will be a 1/8 inch pipe plug you can remove and install the gauge to check the pressure. Should be minimum 240 lbs. Is the sentry light working properly? When you shift to low range and tractor doesn't want to move the light should be coming on.

PTO?? My guess would be the clutches are burnt and probably welded together. There is two plugs you can remove to check drive pressure and brake pressure. You should get a service manual, would help greatly

It may be worth your time to give Mike Links at Triple R Tractors a call with your questions. He is the foremost authority on the 88 series.

The Sentry is not preventing you from physically shifting into a range. It is for the dual clutches that control the 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 shifts. Definitely check in the compartment between the pedals for the Sentry module. You do NOT want to run the tractor for an extended period of time without one. Judging by the condition of your tractor I would not be surprised if it had a test harness bypassing the Sentry. The test harness is two plugs, a bunch of wires, and three relays.

Are you the fella that advertises Ford tractors being parted out?

It wouldn’t surprise me either if it’s bypassed. The guy did say hes had wiring issues with it before. And i do believe the reverse problem is major because they were ih people so im sure nothing will be simple. As far as a sentry light im not sure what that is its all new to me but ill do some research when i get it in the shop. I do know there is a green little light on the dash that is one. I suppose thats not it is it? And yes i am the one with all the ford tractor parts. Thats kinda my thing. Just figured the ih would be a new challenge

The sentry box will be mounted to the left side of the pedestal where the fuses are. Very important to always have 12 volts to the sentry, so you gotta make sure you have a good alternator and battery feed to the sentry. There's a diagnosis procedure in the service manual for checking the wiring harness to eliminate the sentry being bad. As mentioned, the bypass is only for testing ( period). Should never be used to operate the tractor.
