IH 56 planter adjustment

I am looking at an ih 56 4 row planter. Is is currently set on 38" rows and i am not well versed on red planters. Are they able to be moved to 30" rows some what easily or would it be a project.
Thanks Nate

We ran a 56 back in the day, I am quite sure they can be fairly easily changed to 30 inch rows. We always ran 36” rows. There row units are clamped on the main tool bar frame with a sort of U bolt. Those are loosened and the row unit is slid to the new spacing.
Edit: I sent a text to my uncle double checking. The configuration/placement of the transport wheels may dictate the limits of spacing the planter can be set to. I know all the row unit drives are hex shafts and the sprockets are just slid to the appropriate position for them.

I am not failar with that planter, I do have a owners manual someware but do not know where it is. Amish friend ought one with intensions to conver to cutch lift.I just know I convinced him that it would be impossible convert to clutch lift and work. I DO NOT rember if the wheel spacing is adjustable or not and that is what you have to look at as for converting from wide rowas to narrow but i thin if you start looking closely to that parrt you will find it se adjustable as that planter is new enough that when it came out a lot of people were going to the narrow rows. Just look closely to the mounting of the wheels to find out as they will have to be closer for 30 inch rows than 40 inch to clear the openers.

I just talked to my uncle and he was fairly certain that it could be changed to 30” rows. He said the transport wheel mounts may need flipped over or changed side to side but was pretty sure it would work. He still uses it to plant their sweet corn patch.

Thats good news to me. Just wanted to make sure i wasnt going to have to cut and weld the row units to move them.

This help?

Depends on your definition of "easy." There's quite a significant amount of disassembly required. The wheel frames need to be "flipped over." That's assuming everything comes loose and slides along the drive shafts easily.

Be aware that there is very little space between the wheels and the seed boxes. If you have a lot of rocks they like to get kicked up and punch holes in the seed boxes.

It sounds like if i decide to go the route of this planter it should not be hard just time consuming. Which is fine with me we dont plant much corn in october here in ohio lol. I was just wanting to avoid any fab projects, i aint worried about torching some bolts if i have to. Thanks for the input, we also dont have to fight many rocks here just a few i pick when the disk finds them
