IH 656 Hydro

Is there a safe way to move (tow) the tractor if It wont run. I need
to move it to our shop just a short distance away. What do you
need to do to not hurt the hydro transmission? I have read some
people damaging the hydro transmissions.

Thanks,
Todd

Make sure range transmission is in neutral and you can tow it no problem. If it is in gear I have seen some towed ten feet and tore up the hydrostatic motor. Rips the slippers right off the ends of the pistons.

Ditto for me. I have a Hydro 70 and had to tow it a few miles home when a hydraulic line to the hydro motor broke towing a trailer house. Threw the range trans into neutral and had no problem towing. The Hydro 70 is basically the 66 series version of the 656 Hydro.

I assume you mean the range selector is in it's center position? I am a John Deere man, and I inherited this tractor. Trying to get the ole girl going again.

Thanks,
Todd

My book says both handles have to be in the centre, the hydro lever in the centre position and the range lever in nuetral position to tow the tractor.

Sounds like the engine does not run on this tractor so the SR lever does not matter where it is moved to as the swash plate will be in the position it was last in when the engine was shut off and with no hydraulic pressure to move it will remain there. Doesn't hurt to put in neutral fwd, rev of course but the range transmission lever is what disconnects the physical gears from the hydrostatic motor. Some things are of course lubricated from hyd pump so it is not recommended to pull at high speed or very far with out engine running.
