Ih 656 Shifter update

There was a kit but no longer available, it had to do with changing the cast part that the gearshift sticks down into that comes out of the side of the dash. See link to see the part I am talking about. Look at the end of the parts list in my link to the diagram in your other post, that is where the kits are listed. The problem is those pins and yokes in all that linkage get slack or wear in them, as that all adds up it turns into a problem. Slow deliberate shifting concentrating on the H pattern as the Vet replies in your other post will get you by a long time. I would definitely not purchase this tractor to put a loader on. I think that tractor is going to bring more than you think. Everything in the used Ag market is crazy high right now. Look at Machinery Pete and the 656s listed there. When I looked it up one of the last in the list there was a real clapped out looking narrow front gasser and they had $8995 on it. I realize Petes site is sort of a novelty site so some of those prices may be pie in the sky. But if you look at Tractor House the ones listed on there are not far off. If they sell this one as a 2 gear tractor I suppose it may come in at that $3000 mark. Where are you located? Is this a Farmall row crop tractor or the utility, diesel or gas? Pictures would help.

I was thinking of it for a loader, there was a loader for it at the sale too. However Im that case Ill avoid it. I was probably going to go up to $3500 for it but Ill keep looking. Thanks for your responses

I have a 656 with a loader on it wide front had the shifter fall apart I put a oversized metric dowel in it works well I am very mindful to not force it and make sure I am in neutral before going to another gear

By the sounds of the shifting problems I would move on up to a 7or856 sounds like they are simpler and easier to fix if you have shifting problems. They will sell for about the same money too.

Not sure you can use the large frame shifters in the 656

The 656 only has 1 transmission vs a high low reverse one coupled to a 4 speed range trans

You have 2 shifters on the 7/856 with the range on a straight 1-2-3-4

You can't. They're completely different.

The only "update" to the 656 shifter is a different shaft that has a square pin instead of round, because the round pins commonly work loose and fall partway out, leaving you only able to shift between two gears, EXACTLY what the OP's problem is.

It's not worth the update IMHO if you can even still get it. There is an easy "FREE" solution and all it requires is a hammer and a center punch.

Once you retrieve the pin, take it to your bench. Close your vise so the pin will lay in the crevice between the jaws. Take your center punch and hammer, and create a series of dimples around the middle of the pin. Maybe 6 dimples in total.

Now reinstall the pin, and it will fit tightly in the shaft. Be careful to not drive the pin through too far, as you can only access it from the bottom to drive it up. To drive it back requires complete disassembly of the shifting mechanism.
