IH 686 hyd pump

When changing the trans oil what is the best oil to use? Also does the pump need to be primed? If so how do you do it? Thanks Howard

The best oil is the one that was formulated for it. That would be Viscosity Ultraction hydraulic and transmission fluid. It used to be known as Hy-Tran before CaseIH switched suppliers to Shell.

That's the "best" but not the "only." If you don't care you can just use the cheap yellow bucket fluid. You can step up to the "Premium" fluids offered by farm & ranch stores that state it's compatible with CaseIH HyTran. There are other brand name fluids that are middle-of-the-road and claim compatibility.

One thing you have going for you here is that the tractor is relatively simple in design, gear drive with gear pumps and dry clutches. It does not have any fancy wet clutches, powershifts, or CVT/iVT technology which would necessitate manufactuer-specific additive packages, so you can "get away" with pretty much whatever.

There is a wet clutch in the pto. Probably stay away from yellow
bucket 303. Use hytran or farm store compatible equivalents. I
guess I never really had to prime one of them pumps. I always
did pour oil in pump right before installing it and they always
seemed to prime on its own. Got six of them tractors running
around the farm here.

Ah it does have WET CLUTCH PTO and it has a T/A even though it has a dry T/A clutch it is the sprag ya have to worry about so NO 303 .
