At my wits end. Tractor was running fine until a month ago. Idles amazing, but as soon as I put some throttle to it, it stumbles....can only get ot to around 2500 rpm, and wont go past...like its missing oe something. Oil level is good, just changed fuel filters, and still wont climb. Grey-ish smoke as its stumbling. Where do I look next??

Injection pump probably needs removed for repair, confirm by loosening the two screw timing cover on the pump side. If engine runs OK WITH the fuel leak at cover but slows again with the cover tight, it's confirmed pump needs repair. The weight retainer ring inside is coming apart as they do over time.

No change with cover off or on

No offense, but to clarify, the timing cover held on by two screws, leaks fuel when loose?

If that makes no change check this next. Remove the inlet hose AT the injection pump and check the flow out of the hose for a minute, if it appears slow REPLACE that hose. I've seen them collapse INSIDE over time and restrict the flow the injection pump needs for correct engine operation.

I have an early 706 also with 282 motor, did a rebuild a few years ago and still not right. I think timing is the problem but I plan to take it off and have it checked before I mess with the timing. Also I redid all the precombustion cups so that should not be the problem and others on here may say for you it could be as I don’t like the set up. But something to check if it’s not timing.

I must be missing something- you say yours won't go past 2500 RPM? IIRC both of ours, the 63 Demonstrator and the 65 were governed at about 2400

I'd try some timing changes FIRST before pulling the pump, it's easier. Most shops WILL NOT just put on a used pump on their test stand unless they have the pump apart for inspection first to prevent any risk of damage to the test stand injectors. I've seen just a 2 degree timing change help or hurt the IH 236/282/301 engines before.

Thank you for all the help. Ill do some tinkering around and see what I can come up with
