IH 715 Combine engine issue

I have an IH 715 diesel combine. It starts good, and runs well FOR A WHILE. After 10 to 15 minutes of combining, it starts running a little rough, the ideals down to the point you can't thresh. If I turn it off and wait 10 minutes, it starts and runs fine again before repeating the same problem. I have changed all 3 fuel filters, and it made no difference. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

Which engine and what brand injection pump? If it is a D-301 with a Roosa Master injection pump loosen the two screws that hold the metal cover over the timing window and let a bit of fuel leak when running. If it stays running with the window loose, the pump needs to be rebuilt. the flex ring is likely failing.

Not saying it’s not an injection pump problem but start with the stupid things first. Try running it with the fuel cap loose. Could be as simple as the vent is plugged and it’s pulling vacuum on the tank.

Never worked on a 715, but if it was me do all filters first, if it has a charge pump would be the next, check all fuel lines as I had a that on a tractor last but not least the pump.

This times two, it either has a D-301 or a D-310 and this would probably not apply to the D-310. If you don’t know which take a picture of the pump and post it. If the flex ring is the problem there is a work around that would let you finish harvest without the interruptions. I won’t post it until you know that is for certain the pump you have and the problem has been diagnosed as Jim has explained. The reason for not posting the work around is if left in place as a longer term fix will cause the pump greater damage.

And to get u going follow the return line to the tank and there should be a check valve that can be removed and blown out with air. It plugs up with brown mush. I know I have did this on the tractors. It’s a 1/8 pipe thread if no
Plug u can use a 1/8 grease nipple. So the combine should have the same deal. Or the check valve can be removed also but that’s a pain as you will have diesel running back through the line.

Ooh and one more thing that little ball can get stuck in that fitting and also cause that problem. Had that happen this fall.

Jay if you find this is the problem, take note of his first few words, “to get you going” This is only to be a temporary fix. If it is left with the flex ring disintegrated the internal mating parts beat against each other spreading metal filing inside of your injection pump, not good.
Are you aware of member Dieseltech on here? I would suggest you pull it off in the off season and send it to him for repair.

Check flow with filter by charge pump off. If seems wimpy shoot compressed air up filter housing back into tank with cap off. If flow improves that probably was your problem.

The strangest things get into fuel tanks , and there seems to be no explanation for it, especially when the strainer is in place.

Is there some kind of electric fuel pump to supply the injector pump, or a hand pump near the motor for bleeding purposes? Possibly a dirty electric pump or a worn hand pump admitting air into the system.... or air coming in from any joint or crack in the system between the injector pump and the fuel tank. Air in the pump affects the timing and will cause rough operation and power loss

I had a kernel of corn get in the tank on an Oliver 7300. It got down in the neck of the sediment bowl. I didn't find it until I took the whole thing out of the bottom of the tank.
Many years ago, my neighbor had "M" Farmall with one soybean in fuel tank. Tractor would run fine, and the soybean would roll around and plug the fuel orfice intermittently.

 he replaced the fuel filters, and he had to have them bleed properly and would have noticed the fuel flow.🤷‍♂️

Have you checked valve clearance?
As engine warms up and things expand the valve clearance disappears and valves can’t close
Is the cooling system ok?
Is the radiator ok

Possible, but very unlikely. In this scenario only one or two valves generally loose there clearance. This would only cause a misfire on this cylinders and loss of power but not as severe as is being explained here. Especially on a diesel where an intake valve being held open does not effect the fuel mixture to the level it would on a gas engine. Usually exhaust valves are the ones that the clearance goes away on.
