IH 806 fueling issue

This is a turbocharged D-361 engine.

While clipping pasture the other day the engine would occasionally bump up about 200rpm and stay there for a few minutes before dropping back down.

Last night it started doing the same but then would occasionally power down by about 400rpm or so, then eventually come back up to where it was set at. This usually happened when going up a hill.

I'm not real familiar with this engine but at first when it was just the 200rpm increase I was thinking governor. But now with the rpm loss too, I'm worried it is the IP going out? When my Cummins 12 valve looses rpms its the lift pump failing but this tractor's IP is gravity fed.

The hour meter stopped at 2,3XX so I have no idea how many true hours on the tractor or the history of the IP.

Anybody have any insight or experience? I changed the fuel filters, mainly because they were due anyway but doubt this will have any effect.

Thanks,

If the gravity fuel flow TO the injection pump is OK, then yes, injection pump needs serviced soon. I repaired an 856 pump last month for the same issue. Best remove the pump to engine drive assembly and have it re-sealed too when pump is removed for repair. Drive seals are NOT in the pump on 361-407 engines, but in the drive adapter instead.

That's what I was afraid of.

Did you use instructions? I assume the pump has to be timed? I'll rebuild the drive assembly too.

Many thanks,

Found a rebuilt pump for $875. The unit on the tractor is a Stanadyne but the shop man said Bosch was OEM?

Anybody have a link to instructions on how to remove? Looks simple but I assume it has to be timed?

Many thanks,

Shop man is wrong, Bosch pumps were never used on the IH 806, Bosch INJECTORS were though. First IH 806 used the IH RD pump, then switched to Stanadyne/Roosa-Master pumps. Best get a service manual for timing instructions, but if none around remove the two screw timing cover on the pump side. After fuel stops running out turn engine by hand with a pry bar on flywheel teeth under the side cover until the two pump marks align.

Good to know.
