IH 806 sleeves

I am trying to help a neighbor get a IH 806 running. One piston scored the sleeve really bad. So we are thinking of doing a complete overhaul. Everyone local is telling me I will need to take the block to a machine shop to get the sleeves installed. I have never done an IH dry sleeve motor but have done many other brands. I have sleeve pullers. So is there anything really "special" about doing a D361??? I know to check the block for roundness.
 
keep the sleeve with the corresponding piston that came with the kit. put the sleeves in the freezer over night and they are easier to install.
 
Biggest thing is making sure the counter bores are clean and the deck height is all with in a .001between each cylinder and not more than about .002 over all so the head sets down tight without being cocked up in one spot. I would check the lip on the sleeve then check the depth of the counter bore. This would tell you if there would be a problem before installation. And if which I doubt if the counter bores need to be evened up. Keeping the new sleeves with the hole you check so if there is a difference in holes or sleeves they match up like the measurements. You would need a depth gauge for this since you would need to get the depth of the counter bore. This being so critical so the head and gasket seal with the poor quality of the gaskets now days. Are you doing this in the frame or out of the frame? Those sleeves are quite thin If I remember right form 45 years ago when I did mine. I would just polish the block if it is dirty in the bore not so you loosen the fit just to clean it good so the heat transfers to the block well. IF in the frame I would change both seals while rolling in the new bearings. IF not the mains will probably got to leaking soon. I did an out of frame on mine in the early mid 80's and the main seal is now leaking on the front and when I had it split for the clutch a few years ago I changed the rear main while I had it open. If you have the cam bearings out make sure you keep the holes for the oil flow aligned with the block hole or you will starve the top end.
 
I wonder why your friends would be of that opinion.... that was the whole idea of sleeves since the beginning of time..... so you wouldn't have to take the block to a machine shop .

Just one piston? Make sure you mark the injectors before you take them out. Then get them tested. If you remove a piston and there is black death on the skirt, you may have a fuel problem. Poor pattern / leaks will cause detonation which overheats the piston and swells it to zero clearance.

If this happens again you're going to want to know what position the injectors were in , in relation to the failed piston.

We sent the injectors to a pump shop to be rebuilt. The injection pump was just done three years ago.

I ran a search using “sleeve” as a key word and 12 pages of results with 20 per page came up. You could narrow that down by adding 806 or D361.
