IH 884 (D) Starting Problem.
My 884 will not start without a short shot of starting fluid, whether cold or hot, engine spinning as it should. Runs fine when working, but, if stopped, it will not start again with a small shot of starting fluid. Any ideas what the problem is?

hey cool, i by no means am a expert. i redid a fence row 584 some years back. and if you addressed the filters and i not sure that would even do it. i had a hell of a time to get mine to start with a key and had to use either to start after rebuild. the pump timing was the problem. i knew a guy that was a past IH mech and we worked on it for a hour to get it set right. never had a problem since then but its got to be on the mark. i think your about 20 miles south of me as i have a book for it if needed.

Dieseltech could give the best answer to this, but basically your injection pump head is worn so bad it can't build enough pressure when cranking to pop the fuel nozzles. Ether speeds the cranking speed enough to build the fuel pressure, and it will run fine after it starts. I actually had this problem once on a 884. The pump is very hard to get parts for. Good luck, Mark.
