Hi, this is my first time here so I hope the question I have is allowed. I am restoring a IH Cub 149. I started my taking the rear fenders off so I can address a hydraulic leak. After I clean 40 years of oil from the pump and rear end, I noticed some burned wires. someone has bypassed the neutral safety switch. I stripped the harness and replaced the bad wires. my question is according to the wire harness for this tractor it is supposed to have voltage regulator number IH 545130-R93 which has B, G, F and ground. the voltage regulator that someone replaced has L, B, F and ground. They had the F wire going to the A post on the generator. I know L is load, B is battery F is field and of course ground. my question is will the V/R that has L, B & F work? if so, how to wire it. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help.

If I remember correctly the OEM regulator is mounted on rubber and this not case grounded to the chassis.
Onlycubcadets.com would be a huge source of vintage CC info.

Our 149 regulator has a ground braid from the base of
the regulator to 1 of the mounting tabs.
The typical wiring is F to generator field [stud].
B to battery
A to generator A stud [armature].
L should be lights or load.
This is how ours is wired.
Jim

Thanks everyone for the quick response. The V/R that was on the tractor was mounted directly on the inner fender. I thought that it should have been mounted on the rubber. Sounds like I need to buy the original and then all my wires will be correct.

The regulator you have now has GOT to have an "A" or "G" terminal (ARM or GEN, which mean the same thing).

Are you calling the "G" terminal "Ground", when in fact it means "GEN"?

IF so, the regulator you have MAY work just fine IF it hasn't been damaged or has failed by connecting it up properly.

(Does it have one of it's terminals UNDERNEATH?)

In the case where the original regulator didn't have an "L" terminal and the replacement does the "L" terminal can be simply IGNORED.

Be SURE to polarize the generator BEFORE starting the engine!

No need to pre polorize the generator on a 149, it's a starter/generator and it gets polarized when current passes through it to start the tractor.

Hi Wore Out, the regulator that was on the tractor has 4 terminals. grd in the back, L, B & F on front.

What is actually STAMPED on the terminal that has the (meaningless) "GRD" label in paint?

Is there a terminal on the underside of the regulator? Photo?

My mistake, the post painted grd is actually gen. This may change everything. Hopefully I can use this. I see no terminal underside but here is a picture
