IH Farmall 404

I have a chance to look at this tractor for sale. Haven't seen it yet but owner says it runs good. Did they come with belt pulley and 3-pt hitch standard? Looking for comments good/bad about this tractor. Thanks, Michael

Final evolution of the Farmall C. Not many made.

Can't say what is "standard" but factory 3pt was definitely available for them. It just sat on top in place of the platform, and is the reason you sit down low straddling the torque tube like a Utility.

The belt pulley could have been an option, or one off of a C/Super C would fit, I believe. Belt driven equipment was mostly obsolete by the mid 1960's so it probably was a special order from the factory, or a dealer add-on.

This is going to sound like doubletalk. But "standard" equipment for the 404 included a cat 1 3-point hitch. It could be ordered without the hitch. Transmission driven PTO was standard as well.

There was an option for a belt pulley. It was (at least some of the time) only available for field installation. The PTO and belt pully attachment were vastly different from the ones on the 240 and earlier models. You cannot install the earlier pulley attachment directly onto the 404s PTO. It MAY be possible to install the entire PTO and pulley assembly from an earlier tractor, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I would expect a belt pulley attachment for a 404 to be incredibly rare. If you are looking for a tractor to run a belt, you would probably do well to look at a different tractor.

(quoted from post at 10:47:02 12/15/23) IHC made the 404 in two versions. International 404 is utility model, the Farmall 404 is the row crop model.

That is true. It didn't occur to me that the OP could be calling it "Farmall" simply because it's a red IH tractor.

I believe there are far more 404 Utility models out there than Farmalls. At the time row crop work tended to be done by much larger tractors, and a "utility" tractor was needed for work around the farm yard. Competition in that segment was fierce.

I believe all the tractor model specific comments in this thread would apply to both the Farnall and Utility versions of the 404. The relative popularity of the Utility model was probably driven by non-farm uses. Contractors needing a light loader tractor would have been a market. I think a lot of them became highway mowers.
