IH Farmall 544 value

Hello, I recently purchased property adjoining mine and the seller included his Farmall 544 in the purchase. It has the gas engine, approx 6800 hrs, 3 point hitch, The tractor runs excellent, has 2 rear hydraulic remotes, and has the 5 speed gear with the TA, so technically 10 speed I suppose. The previous owner Took excellent care of it and primarily used to clear snow for a few dozen hours a year for the last 25 years or so, so it has seen relatively little use in that period. It is a little large and I would like to sell it and put the funds towards something a bit smaller. I dont see a lot for sale, especially in the row crop configuration, and I was just looking for some input on value. It has been shed stored for the past 25 years or so and the original paint is in very good shape. I am located in northern Michigan if that helps at all. Any input would be really appreciated and Id be happy to answer any other questions to help determine a fair asking price for the tractor.

It is a small tractor in today's world. If you have even 10 acres it is about right.
If it is as described it might bring 3500 in an auction if the tires are good to better. (I would keep it)

Hi, thanks for the input. The tires are about 5-6 years old and in quite good condition. I guess the reason I was looking to move on from it is more the intended purpose rehab the size I guess. The property is along Lake Superior and is very hilly with quite a few cliffs and drop offs. As I understand the Farmall is obviously a farm tractor and it is much wider and taller than I would prefer. Im looking for a more modern hydro and a diesel, something to pull a little 6ft brush hog to keep trails open and do general property maintainance. The property is all wooded and for snow removal on the driveway it is fine but looking for something a little more flexible. I suppose that was the line of thinking to sell it, but it is a lot of machine for the money so if there are no takers I may keep it around

Keep it it will out last all those cheap high dollar plastic models you can buy now. If you decide you want something smaller you can always shop for that then. For the snow you will get along one of the great lakes you will want weight and power for pushing it. That will be to your advantage plowing snow compared to these light built newer models. I live down state from you and I use more tractor than that for plowing snow and we don't get near the snow you will in a years time.
It is also cheaper for maintenance than these new models with all the fancy electrical junk on them. Fooling with DEF with your diesel. You will also want a block heater on a diesel up there for easier starting.

(quoted from post at 06:04:15 01/31/22) $3500? If it's as nice as he says, more like $6000 around here.

Clapped out non-running 544's sell for $3500.
Really? Thats good to know. Where are you located. Part of my worry is that Im am about as far north as you can be in Michigan and the population is a little thin. I considered hauling it downstate to get a better price. If this is the case then I may have to do that.

Keep it, use it, apparently there is a garage for it, too keep it in, that's a perfect tractor for the job, there i would say!

I really would like to, Im just a bit apprehensive about the width and apparent tippiness. There are Several abandoned railroad grades the cross the property. They are about 15 feet wide at the top and have probably a 60 degree slope on either side and cross gorges 100-200 feet deep. Im just a little apprehensive about using something that big there I suppose. The prosecutors owner didnt use it there so for him it wants and issue.

However maybe I will have to try it and see how it goes and maybe it wont be so bad as I am thinking it will be. I do appreciate the input.

Upstate NY.

You don't have to haul it. Just advertise it to a wide enough area. Someone will come and get it. Remember you can always lower your price, you can't (ethically) raise it, so don't sell yourself short.

I'm not sure there are any tractors that can work well on those steep slopes. If you do find one that does you may wind up rutting and tearing up the slope and then it starts to wash downhill. Sheep or goats would work to keep the slopes trimmed. Thick grass on the slopes might be your best option as new weeds will be shaded and crowded out.

Sorry I should have Been more clear. I want to brush hog the tops of the grades and I feel a bit spooky diving that big tall tractor so close to such steep sides. Could t pay me to try and drive anything on those slopes.

I agree, newer tires, 3 point hitch, nice condition, its worth at least $6000 maybe more. Any BigIron or Auction Time auctioneers around you? They will take care of everything and you will get a very fair if not high price! These have become very collectible the last couple years.

I really appreciate the input from everyone! I put it on CL and Facebook and found a collector who was looking for a 544 to restore and he really, really wanted it. I was able to get 6,000 for it which it almost twice what I thought it was worth
