IH Pull type combine

I was given a mid 1950's IH combine, the pull type with the canvas hopper. It has its own motor, it sure looks like a Super A type to me. This combine supposely was only use one season and the owner died. It has been sitting in a storage barn for that many years. It has dual wheels and really nice shape. Is this probably a super A powerplant that could be used on a tractor.

Some of those Super A's used an engine block 354898R1 so did the Super C's. You probably will need a flywheel. Hal

Usually a combine engine will have the provision for the starter to mount parallel to the engine block from the front. The block will be missing one bolt hole when mounted in a tractor but there are a lot of them working just fine in tractors.

Some of those power plants were Cub engines so you do need to run the serial numbers to be sure.

Didn't the combine engine use a heavier flywheel, than the tractor engine?

Perhaps, but generally when you transplant a combine engine into a tractor, the tractor has a flywheel that you can use on the combine engine.

You sure you want to knock this rare combine in the head for the engine?

That is what I was thinking.


I watched an old IH combine 81(?) sell last spring at auction - it brought just over $10,000. Even with all the work would an A ever bring a 1/3 of that?

If the engine has overhead valves it isn't a Cub engine. I would keep that combine. We had one, but it was driven off the pto. Hal

Why need a flywheel if it has starter and combines did have a clutch balers did not use a clutch.
