IH sickle mowers

there is a man near me in ohio with a semi mount sickle bar mower for a farmall h. are these very good machines? any major problems with them? what would be good value of it? he is a JD man and says it is just taking up space in his barn and is scrap to him.

The ballanced head mowers are very good mowers. The pitman mowers are just that. Pitman mowers.

how can you tell whether or not it is a balanced head mower or not? the pitman type have a wooden piece holding the sickle right?

Either one will cut hundreds of acres of crop if not worn out. Balance head is easier on components, and psychology. If at less than 100$ and the bar and bearings are serviceable, buy it. (assumes you need it) Jim

Ive had 2 IHC sickle mowers with pitman. I didnt like the first, and parted it out to my uncle 40yrs ago for parts for his. I got one now, and its alright. My dad didnt like the belt drive and went with #5 JDs all his life after an IHC #9 Horse mower. I never had no preoblem with mine if I kept the sprouts cut out of the field. When I was young, I was lazy and didnt do that, and ive had to replace many pitmans. I dont remember dad every haveing to replace a pitman, Course, he didnt have any sprouts growing in his alfalfa field.

Make sure all the parts to mount it are there and haven't been farmer engineered too much.

I've been thinking about fixing up my Dad's old IH mower but may need some parts. Are parts still available for them?

We bought 2 new 120 balanced head mowers in the late 1960's, maybe early 1970's, time goes by quick. We tried our darnest but couldn't wear them out, at least the main parts of the mower. Any brand will wear out sickles and sections.

Anyway, we never had to do any repair on the balanced head part. Just kept it greased. Great mowers.
