Good day

I have a 1066 that will not run. I installed a rebuilt injection pump, have made sure its timed properly. The valves have been reset, a rocker arm replaced, lift rods checked.

The tractor tries to run but just belches alot of black smoke and will not run.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The biggest reason for this is that something you assume is "right," isn't. Don't assume you did ANYTHING correctly. Go back and check again. If that doesn't help have an impartial set of eyes check your work.

My guess is the pump is 180 degrees out of time. That pump runs engine speed, but the hydraulic head runs half speed like the engine camshaft. Get it back in time with the cover removed in front of the pump drive gear. Remove the gear bolts, and with a 7/8 inch socket on the pump drive nut turn it exactly one turn, and replace the gear bolts, then recheck the timing. I always try starting with the cover off, if it starts right away it's OK to install the cover. If not the pump drive needs turned. Had to do that a lot for one fellow who would remove pumps, but never put them back on. He never set the timing before removing them.

I got a $3,000 dollar injection pump from
John Deere last year for an 8300. Timed it
when I took it off, checked timing again,
put it on, wouldn't start. If I retarded the
timing about 70 degrees, it would start.
Called the local Deere dealer, service
manager said no way was there a problem with
their part, never saw an issue with any of
their pumps. They sent their tech out, who
verified my finding, that it was the new JD
pump itself, and his service manager still
didn't believe him. He ordered another new
pump, and came back out and installed.
Started up perfectly. He then clued me in
that his service manager was either full of
BS or forgetful, as he had personally seen 5
pumps that came from JD in the last couple
years that were assembled wrong internally
by the manufacturer. The service manager
tried to play it off as I was a dummy, but
didn't know I used to be a heavy equipment
mechanic. The tech told me they would
probably try to bill anyway for his labor
and if they did, to just throw it away. They
never tried to bill for their tech though.
Something to keep in mind anyway...

I've had the pump back to the rebuilder to be checked out in case something was not right. They say everything is fine.

I think this tractor will have to be next winters project.
