Imac Upgrade Wonderment

Looking for some help from a person who is something more of a "computer whiz" than I am. I'm an old school boy....slide rule and all.

I am typing this question on an IMAC desktop using the MAC OS High Sierra, version 10.13.6 that has served me faithfully for many years........ Everything associated with my communications (on it) with you and others is what I would call normal. In particular the visual effects are as you would expect to see in person with your normal vision, or what you would see in the many pictures we see on this site on farm operations. I'm finding that some sites, that may have something I need to purchase, have upgraded their software to the point where I can no longer do business with them with my "old" (existing) software.

So, I get another IMAC, referbished, prior owner, from a reputable supplier, very reasonable price, which comes with the "New Ventura" software version OS 13.7.6. This software is weird. Everything is helter-skelter, very unorganized. The images of anything are made up of maybe 4 colors and the contrast is like 0 and 10....no shading, no normal views of anything. A lot of what are regular pictures on the old software, appear with so much contrast that you can't make out half of the picture due to part of it, a good part of it is black and pictures are more of outlines rather than what a normal camera would take.

Is this where Apple has gone......have the cooks taken over the company? I really need some help. Last time I tried to order vitamins from Swanson Vitamins, using my old software that had allowed me to make many purchases over the years, just crashed when you got to the pay the bill part. I noticed Walmart had the same obstruction.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This www is a big part of my life, living alone at 83 on my farm.

Can your “reputable supplier” work with you to update the operating system on the new machine? My wife uses a MAC laptop and she says the Ventura software is still to out of date. Buying something for a “reasonable price” is of zero value if it doesn’t work. The “reasonable price” then becomes a screw job. If you had 10,000 bushels of ear corn to shell would you buy a couple hundred hand crank shellers? Money in the lining of your coffin also has zero value. Buy something that will work for you and enjoy it while you’re still on the top side.

Well I talked to a real person today and as a result of that conversation I am currently in the upgrade mode on my computer. 15 mines till incorporation...will see how i goes.

TexasMark,
Hope the upgrade works for you.
Upgrade went without a hitch except the photographs and pictures are as they were. I think I'll throw my 3 IMACs in the garbage, maybe use them for target practice, and seek something else. I wonder if Microsoft is experiencing the same "modernization" as Apple. If so maybe I'll go back to my #2 lead (graphite) wooden pencil and a Big Chief tablet!!!!!!

This upgrade is Ventura 13.7.7, Apple's latest software upgrade for IMACs. I would be proud to have been part of the development of this masterpiece.......pffffffffffffft.

I really know nothing about iMacs but just trying to help you out. Maybe someone who is a mac genius will chime in. How old are the monitors you are using?
When I web search “color problems when using an early monitor with a later model imac” the results show “Solutions” and then…. See screen shot.
There is more if you search it yourself.

The monitor is a 2017 version, well suited for the upgrade, especially since the upgrade was automatically available from Apple. Thanks for the instructions posted. I'll dig into that later on today and post back the results. Really hope there is some positive reactions from the equipment.

I had many Imacs for many years, never could handle Windows. Some years back the latest Mac upgrade became very Windows like. I switched to Android and never looked back. Now I get by with an HP Chromebook and a couple of phones.

Well sir your instructions were right on with what the IMAC posted for this task. The problem is that even though I saw changes to the displays, the overall color scheme just showed minor variations as I went down the list of avaiable options, including the custom offering. So I guess I'll just have to get used to this and use my older computer (the one on which I am typing) running High Sierra unless I get to a site that has upgraded and the HS no longer is recent enough to work that site. Walmart and Swanson Vitamins are 2 of those.

Thanks again.

Android? Will have to check out what that is. Thanks

You may have an old graphics card in which case you need to upgrade the card or just buy a new machine. Once you start upgrading individual cards you enter a difficult stage of product life. Just get a new machine and run it at the store (like BestBuy or something where the machines are running for you to try) before you buy it.

Thats a good idea. Next time I go to town, I will execute your suggestion. The nearest town has a BB. Thanks again.
