ImVoltage problem

Ford 3400. Bushhogging at 1800 rpm for 4 hours. Got off back in the yard noticed the generator was very hot. Got the voltmeter, seeing 13.8 at low idle, 15.7-8 occasionally 16 at 1800. After checking connections, resistance in ground cable, making sure generator body is grounded I'm assuming the voltage regulator is bad. Voltage at generator is about 2/10 more than at battery. Immediately after shutdown battery shows 14 volts. Sitting overnight 13.2. . Any advice is appreciated. I'll order up a new vr but I have one more small patch of hay to mow right away. Would there be any problems with just disconnecting the generator to run for a few hours?
