I bought an IH 140 that when I went to replace the points, (it had been running fine), I found them gapped way to wide. After investigating, I found the distributer out of time. The points were adjusted too wide to compensate.
To answer your question, usually points close up and will cause a lack of power, mainly due to a weak spark at the plugs, and also the timing will be altered a bit. It might make the engine sound lean (to some ears!) There should be a loss of power. Mark.

I will add that if too close (when the timing was set when they were gapped correctly)the timing will be retarded. if wide, the timing will be advanced. two other items. If you can feel play in the distributor shaft, up down or sideways, not in/out, the bushing is bad and rebuilding is needed. The second thing is to put a match head sized dab of distributor cam lube/grease on the rubbing block of the points so the cam hits that side of the block. Jim

thanks for the answers, the reason for the question is that when engine has been run up to temp it still idles fine but at higher rpm there is popping in exhaust, it isnt there when engine is not up to temp adjusting carb doesnt change the popping at higher speeds

Popping from either the exhaust or intake can indicate low valve lift, meaning out of adjustment or cam lobe worn.
