Indexing Spark Plugs

I saw this concept mentioned in a post some time ago, and it got me to thinking.(dangerous, I know)
I suppose anything we can do to make these old tractors run better or be more efficient is definetly a plus.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows how to index plugs. I understand it involves pointing the electrode tip up toward the valves (?)

To index plugs, you mark the plug with a magic marker on the side where the electrode pionts. screw the plug in the hole and see where it points in relation to where you want it to point. You can get indexing washers at about any speed shop, or Jegs and Summitt racing. you add what ever thickness it takes to get it where you want it.

Hi Dennis

Indexing the plugs won’t give you any more hp from your tractor. If you want more from your ignition the best bet for your dollars is electronic ignition. For about $100 you will have more power and the engine will start and run better in all conditions.

Respectfully, electronic ignition will not provide any more engine horsepower than a properly tuned conventional ignition system. It will, however, eliminate the need to replace the points and condensor and provide more reliable starts and operation without misfire due to deteriorated points of failed condensor. I have one on my TO-30 and I installed it so I wouldn"t have to fiddle with points that corrode or wear. I get quick starts in all weather conditions.

A big "thank you" to all who responded. I have the Pertronix EI and it has made a huge difference, not only in ease of starting, but also in how it runs. It seems to have more power than with the points.

I also have the Pertronix on my 35.
The recommended spark plug is the Autolite 385, but it is a resistor plug and I found the #4 plug fouls quickly with them. It's weird that it fouls because it's compression was as high as the others when I tested it (140#).
I find the Autolite 3116 doesn't foul. It's a non resistor plug. I asked Pertronix and they said it doesn't matter if you use resistor or non resistor plugs and wires. The unit doesn't care.
With no misfiring, the engine runs real well, which makes it seem to have more power.

Jerry, will you share the brand and where you got the ignition system? I have several engines that I'd like to do this upgrade - primarily because of point corrosion and rubbing block wear. Since I want 4, cost is a big issue. Thanks,
