Innertube Problem/Question

Don't know if this is the correct forum or not, but here goes. Needed a new innertube for one of the front tires on my Ford 8n and ordered one here from Yesterday's Tractors. Got it in the tire and aired it up................but my gauge wouldn't read it. It's a digital gauge. Reads every other tire on the property, but not this one. What gives ? Any thoughts on the subject ?

The core might just be down too deep in the stem. Maybe a different core if you have one around?

Thanks, I thought of that. All the stems I have are labeled as short stems. Maybe I should go to the auto parts store and look for some labeled long. Thanks.

Try a different gauge or loosen core enough for small escape of air. Test pressure and re tighten core.

rrlund is suggesting you try a different Schrader valve (that is the valve core), as I also suggest. The length of the valve stem does not matter as in general they all use the same valve cores.

And yes, try a different gauge. It sounds like the chuck on that gauge is not making contact with the stem of the valve core to push it down to get a reading. take a look and see that the tip of the valve core is in the center of the stem, I have seen them bent and not let a gauge get a reading.

They sell extra long cores but they are not a common item. You likely won’t find one at a parts store.
The thread in your stem are cut to deep or something may be wrong with your core.

Try a different core.
Try a stem extension.
Or try a different gauge. Double sided truck gauges usually have longer pins to push the core down.
You can also make sure the cap fits on your stem. Your stem might be a little oversized not allowing the gauge to push down over the top of the stem.

Did it take air ok? If so, kick it a few times and if it hurts your toes, it's hard enough!!

I have a digital gauge that will not read air pressure on tires that have 8001 type valve cores. 9001 type are no problem.

I've had valve cores that acted that way. Threw them away and used a new one that worked right. Ordinary cores, nor ordinary pressure gauges, do not get along well with calcium chloride either, they corrode quickly.

Well guys, thanks for your comments and suggestions. I've tried 3 auto parts stores and they didn't know what I was talking about when I mentioned longer valve cores. One was a NAPA parts store. The tube doesn't air well at all. Have to move the hose valve all around and only sometimes does it put any air in the tube. I've tried different brand cores that I have in packages here at my shop. The tip of the cores sticks slightly proud of the stem, so I know it's not too short. And I know it's centered and not bent. Think I'm just going to call Yesterday Tractors and ask for a refund.

Take the core out and see if air goes in.

To satisfy my curiosity I’d measure the OD of the stem with my caliper and compare it with ones that work. If it doesn’t air well it’s because it doesn’t go down far enough. I’m sure YT is satisfaction guaranteed. Let us know if your new tube works better. There are different stems for different applications but I doubt auto parts are aware. Any should release a chunk. That being said I got a little tire the other day I had to try several different chunks before one worked. It was my older well worn one.

These new tubes/ valves that I've gotten lately won't take air unless
there is a core in them. Older valves & tubes could be inflated without
a core in them.
As far as checking pressure goes, we haven't had problems.
Our Milton truck type & pencil gauges vary by 10 pounds pressure
on the same tire. Can't figure why the difference.
