Is it viable/easy to install the destroke screw with the rest of the tractor in place? Easy as remove #35 (or is it #1) and install #29 in its place?

That parts picture is upside down for some reason, 35 is the pressure adjustment on the bottom side of the tractor, just go by the pic for the tractor and remove the outer top plug.

ahhhhhhh- that makes sense. Ultimately then it'll end up being #19 or #20 on top closed to me standing on the left side. excellent.

Below is a link to the JD online parts catalog for the 4020 (-200999). It references different pump but I think I may have gotten the one you need that shows the pump right side up and the stroke control parts you will likely need.

Curious. my PC859 copy (from jensales) for sure has that diagram the other way around. This is better since I now won't be forced in to be doing a handstand for the install. :)

Jensales sells a reprint. While OEM ones can have mistakes the reprints are more likely to have errors, since they are often tearing apart a used OEM manual and scanning the pages so pages can get mixed up, turned wrong, etc.

Using the online catalogs on the JD site gives you the latest version with the updates on substituted parts. They also may be broken down differently as far as part numbers. There is always a question of the printing date of the manual they scanned. An old manual may not be right for a later tractor, just because it used the same model number.

Thanks all. T'was Easy-Peasy. Pulled the air filter cup. Removed the old plug, threaded in the valve, tightened it up and then push the handle pin through the shaft with pliers. Took 15 minutes including dropping the roll pin to the floor about 7 times. I took the opportunity to dump, clean, and refresh the oil in the cup while it was off.

I may have spent more time with the 'deere online parts catalog to order the individual components of the valve than the replacement itself.
