INSTALLING DISTRIBUTOR

I'm going to make some assumptions here. 1st is that the tractor came with a dist and you're not putting one on a mag tractor. 2nd is that it's an electric start A with a full flywheel cover. Get the left hand cylinder at top dead center on compression stroke. There'll be a dot punched into the flywheel center. It should be down and align with a dimple in the edge of the flywheel cover center rim. The clamp bolts will be vertical and the clamp "split" horizontal. On the other side of the tractor, the distributor drive lug should be horizontal. With a Delco dist install with the slot on the back of the dist meshing with the drive lug and the rotor pointing up to the left hand plug terminal. On a WICO dist (two rotor arms) install so that they are at 10 o'clock and 1 o'clock positions. Install the bolts finger snug and rotate the entire dist clockwise as far as it will go. Put a plug wire in the top (left hand cylinder) terminal and stick it on a plug laid on a grounded surface where you can see it. Not near gas pleaase! (I have a test plug with a ground wire long enough to reach the battery to be "sure", but that's just me.) Turn on ignition. Rotate the entire dist counter clock-wise until the plug fires. Sometimes tapping it gently on the mounting flange with something is easier. Where the plug fires is where you want to tighten it up.

Hope this helps and you're hearing popping soon!
