Installing new 1020 fuel tank problems

Purchased new steel tank for my 1020. Some problems installing:

1) Fuel outlet is located further toward rear of tractor by about 1/2". Cannot open/close valve and the fuel line to fuel pump cannot be attached (that is one stiff line!)

2) Upper bolt holes for bolting to cowl are too high by 1/8" on left side, 1/4" on right side - also right side is about 1/2" inside of cowl.

Advice appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds typical for a replacement aftermarket tank/part. Some rework and work around required.

Did you get it from YT/PartsASAP or some other vendor? I suggest you contact the vendor you got it from before undertaking modifications to see if this is a one of or common issue. You modifying it could remove the chance of them making adjustments or providing another tank.

Other major supplier. I haven't made any mods. Will call them. I could get a braided hose made and if I cut down the length of the tee grips that would probably cure that. Major concern is the upper right hand side bolt up. Thanks for your response!

The replacement tank for my TE-20 had similar issues. The tank outlet was farther back so I added a piece of brake line and an inline filter (which I later removed). The tank was also a little taller and the hood came down on the gas cap, so I split the hood and put shims in between and bolted it back together. Thankfully the mounting holes were right. That's another can of worms altogether. The tanks are often universal meaning they can be adapted to many different models of the same brand of tractor and aren't always an exact fit.

"Bang to fit, beat to match"! I'm old enough - I should have expected the problems .........

I had the same issue with my 1020 gas with a new tank. I found online vendors list one tank that kind of fits multiple tractors as fitting. I ended up buying a tank from John Deere. At the time it was not much more than eBay. Although the tank fit better, it still did not fit right. I ended up having to work on the seams of the tank by grinding them and bending them over so it would sit low enough in the frame and the hood would latch closed. Just take your and make adjustments and it will end up good enough for who its for at some point!

Whoa! Thanks for the heads up! I just checked mine - I will have .5" clearance. Distance from radiator fill measures OK. Finally, I could not find new fuel line (tank outlet .5" further rear and steel fuel line doesn't wish to "shorten". Any idea who carries new steel line or do I just go with a hose?)

For my Ferguson I went to an auto parts store. Mine was double flared so I matched it up with a section of double flared brake line but examine it carefully as the bubble flare is very common now. You could just cut the line and splice in a section using ferrule type unions. I believe they are ok for a low-pressure fuel line. If it's not near the exhaust manifold even two pieces of fuel line hose could be used to add a section.

You would likely have to make a new/different line yourself. I know that area in the front support is tight. I don't remember if you could cut the line on the engine side of the tank and take a small section out of it to let the line move back enough or not. A couple inches of fuel hose can join the line where you cut it.

Worst case, there are many out in the world running with fuel hose in that location.

Yep! Fuel hose it shall be! Years ago I looked at a new JD (assembled in India? I believe - except for engine) - It had plastic hydraulic lines running underneath! Thanks for your help!

I did not have that issue, but I also bought a new metal tank to pump fuel line for mine when I replaced the tank. I think I may have done a little line bending to get everything to line up perfect, but it was not off as much as yours sounds like it is. I have made fuel lines on other tractors using nicop brake line and a handheld flaring tool. Worked fine for me but using hose may be an easier choice.

That was a good idea! I had hose made up yesterday at HSC with the fittings crimped on.
