Internatioal T340

I am in the process of purchasing an international T340 crawler with the Drott 4in1 bucket. Current owner knows pretty much nothing about it as he inherited it through a relative's death. There's no battery in it at this time but from what I've researched, its originally a 6 volt system. I would like to at least see it turn over and possibly fire, but dont want to spend the money on a new battery for nothing. Is it possible to put a 12 volt battery in it or will that cause more harm than good? Also, I dont have a serial number. One more question, negative or positive ground? The ground cable appears to be the smaller of the 2 which leads me to believe its negative ground. Any help is appreciated. loop

I will take a stab at this.

First I believe that crawler is 12 volts
However I really can't remember, but being they were made
From 1958 or so until 1965 I find it hard to believe IH was still using 6Volt.

I do know it used two 6 volt batteries.
I'm sure they were in series to produce 12Volt.

Look on the Starter, Generator, or Voltage regulator for there ID tags.
It will state what voltage and the Regulator will be stamped
What voltage and neg. or pos. ground on it's mounting base.

I just looked it up and it is 12Volt.
Two 6Volt batteries wired in series.

So yes one good high capacity battery should work.

Found the tag on the generator. Says 12v so I'm gonna check the cylinders and hydraulic fluid for water then give it a whirl. Thanks for the help Tom. Dave

I agree with everyone else that it's 12 volt. I would pull the plugs and see if it will turn over. I
have a running one and a parts one. Let us know how you make out. Good Luck, Lyle

no problem if you put 12v to a 6v starter , just don't spin it for a long time--Most guys with Cat pony 6 volt engines use 12 v for starting them
