International 1700

I'm thinking about buying a 72 IHC 1700 with a 345 5/2 speed to haul the tractor to some shows. I can buy this very reasonable But would like some of your input on power, mileage, and possibly my sanity. What do you think?

Yes your sanity, It's another engine brakes battery tires ins. etc, to keep up. A nice 15000lb gooseneck will last a life time. Just an opinion, from someone with 4 trucks. LOL Vic

Check... on the sanity. Those old things were nasty enough with a 466 never mind a gas job.
Not something I'd jump into, put it that way. There should be lots of newer S-lines out there with decent mechanical 466 engines and 6 speed transmissions... with air brakes.

If you have a use for that truck other than just for fun, I'd say go for it. It'll handle a goosneck trailer with 2 or 3 tractors loaded far better than any one ton dually will, and the miles per gallon will not be much different. The registration fees won't be any different than a dually, might even be less, and there is a chance you can license it for just part of the year as long as you leave it parked the rest of the time. Insurance SHOULD be the same way. Tires will be a BIG cost, but if you park the truck inside when not using it, the tires will last you until you don't need the truck anymore.

The negatives? You WILL need a CDL, and you WILL be in the cross-hairs of the DOT.

You have the right idea! My cousin has a 1600 IH 345 5&2 900x20 with air brakes and loves it. He sold his F350 4x4 Powerstroke because he could only haul 7000lbs on a 32ft Gooseneck and be legal. Now he just has a 3/4 4x4 to get around and use on the farm. As far as you needing a CDL if you are staying 150 miles from home you dont think you need one to drive the truck hauling your tractors. Fuel yea it gets about 6 mpg but a 1ton with a 350 or 454 is not going to get much better. Tags and insurance wont be much more than a 1ton or maybe less. There are guys that will argue with the idea of using this truck, But you wont overload the truck. The 1700 will have 2 times the brakes of a 1ton has. Tire wise you cant compare a 900x20 to a 235.85R16. I think this type of truck is giong to be used more and more to pull gooseneck trailers around with. If you have a 9500# tractor to haul and have the choice of the 1700 or a 1ton to pull it, You will take the 1700! Get the 1700 you will be happy! As with any hauling Safty is First. Bandit

School buses used the 345 with just a 5 speed and vacuum over hydraulic brakes. This 1700 sounds like it would be a nice hauler. One day I plan to move up to a truck of that size to use for play too.
