International 1850, Value?

Looking at buying an 1850 Loadstar. 2 axle truck, good tires. It is Red, cab / chassy is in very good condition. 5 yard dump box, not in good condition, but still useable.

Engine is a Turbo, 466DT Diesel

The dump box is just SITTING on the truck, has never been installed. I will need to make hydraulic lines, and I will need a PTO for the truck.

We went up to look at it today, hasn't ran in 6 years. It fired RIGHT off, on two brand new Group 31 batteries.

It smoked a little on starting, but nothing bad at all. Hour meter says TWO hours, yes, TWO. It was supposed to have been "rebuilt" right before the owner bought it, has been a county truck all of it's life.

All in all, here's whats wrong with it:

Brakes do NOTHING. NO pedal what so ever. Has an Air / Hydraulic system, and builds 25 PSI of air fast / steady, but no pedal, and there was no fluid in the can.

The killer on the diesel injection pump is froze up, and the only way to kill it, is to dump the clutch.

He lost the keys to it, and tore the ignition switch out of it, and just hot wired the sh!t out of it! Wires hanging out of the dash, etc.

Other than that, everything seems to be in working order, and the truck is decent. I am concerned about the brakes, and the injector pump.

I traded him a little parts tractor (considering that $300), and I spent $380 on batteries today, is $1000 cash to him too much? I am kind of thinking that it is.

What do you guys think?

When was it parked?
If in winter or early spring, your s-cams are probably rusted tight. And you need another 100 psi or so.
That's a pretty old truck, too. Being a county truck it's probably seen a lot of salt, and it's a steel body.
Be ready for a lot of headaches with it.

I would say it is a money pit. The brakes alone could cost hundreds of dollar and those hydraulic brakes just do not stop as good as air brakes. Last fall I purchase a Ford 8000 dump truck for $1800 and it was completely road ready. I took it in for the state inspection and it passed with no issues. I have hauled several 10 ton loads of gravel with it handles the load like it was empty.

Finding a pto for the old IH might be a problem and then you have the problem of installing it and locating the controls. Give it a lot of thought before you jump in.

In the condition you describe - weigh it and offer scrap price. The bed might be worth more than its weight in metal but the rest of the truck sounds a like a nightmare.

You could have a real handful with the brake and injection pump issues. They could get really expensive really fast.
The electrical can also turn into a nightmare getting things into order.
Then there is the mounting and securing of the body. Adding PTO, and a host of other necessary repairs.
Adjust your offer based on the anticipated expense of getting it into usable shape. Also bear in mind that you could be getting yourself a money pit - a bottomless one.

Brakes sound like you have a leaking line possible rusted thru? Fill it up and pump brakes then check for were it is leaking. IH Printed some very good electrical manual for their trucks. Find one to use to put wiring back together. We had some good ones at work that made fixing the wire easy. You didn't say what year it was or what type engine kill it had on it, If cable pull , disconnect at lever and see if the cable was froze up? If electric could be in the wires pulled apart on switch? You have been good in the past at finding used parts to fix things up. I would check on what the tag and insurance would be on it before I bought it. Sometimes cheaper to get someone else to haul it in for you? Good luck and be careful with your project. I bought one 30 years ago without brakes drove it home 200 miles very carefully with just the hand brake. Older now, know better, won't ever do that again.

Air breaks means CDL (in WI anyway) I'd say run from the nightmare.

Looked it up for Idaho, can have CDL and Still not run air unless take test(restriction L)
idaho CDL

Bryce,

Is the lift cylinder there? $800-$1000
cab controls $200
PTO (if you can find one) $500.(what transmission?)

You might find above a scrap yard for 1/2.
As has been said froze shut-off not a good sign,it is usually well lubed.
Brakes, especially dual powered can be a PITA
Being a x county truck I'm surprised it doesn't have a PTO.
Not driveable but running probably just above scrap.

I had an old binder in the 80's, went to the dealer for parts with all numbers that I could find on it and all he asked was what color the interior was
