International 2424

About to inherit an international 2424, my uncle has been working on, and it seem like the 3 point lacks lifting power, can barely pick up a 5 foot brush hog, at idle it won’t pick it up have to rev it to get it to pick it up, any clue on where to start? Filters? Where to put oil in or check oil? Any other advice, also the tractor is a hour away and I work a full time job so I can’t look at it all the time. Any ideas?

When sitting on the seat, beside your right leg there is a steel pipe with a hose connecting to a tube going into the casting. Remove the hose ( very difficult ). Its probably very hard because of age. Then twist and pull on the tube going into the casting, this is a filter - screen, good chance its plugged up. It can be washed with a solvent and reused. This is also the hydraulic reservoir so you will loose all the oil. There is a drain plug in the back of the casting. The fill plug is on the top right corner. Good luck

My 424 had similar problems. Mr. Fred is much more knowledgeable than me so heed his advice first. If the screen he referred you to is not clogged [ my 424 has only a screen, no filter ] then there is an orifice screen under a plug on the front of the same housing Mr. Fred just referred you to. The orifice screen is very thin and about 2 inches long. Best if you have a manual to refer to. If neither screen is clogged then you may just have a weak pump. The pumps are pricey, I shopped around and found one for around $500 and it came out of Oregon[ it was advertised as a perfect fit but I had to ship it back and they machined a tiny portion of casting off and it then fit perfectly. I think it fits a 444 without modification. I assume that you have checked the fluid level through the plug Mr. Fred referred you to. One other possibility MIGHT be a collapsed hose if you have not checked them. There is also a valve on the housing which controls the lift speed. You must be sure to use the correct valve [ there are two on mine and I do not remember which is which as I am not close to my tractor at the moment] one of these valves control the speed at which the lift operates and is the one you might try to adjust. I hope that you have better luck than me and do not need a new pump. Good luck

There are also some round dials (1 or 2) under the front of the seat that control the 3 pt. I hit one accidentally a few years ago getting on or off the seat and shut the lift off entirely. So check those 2 dials. I think they have embossed info telling you what they control. I am going out tonight to split some wood with my 2424 and will look at them closely and get back to you with more info. I bought an Owners manual years ago for mine, I think through this site. Its worth the bucks.
