International 354

I just bought one at an auction and have no idea how to turn on the PTO? Can someone share the light? Also what is the foot pedal by my right heel? Its froze up solid. Is there a switch for the glow plugs? Not much info on the net. Lots of people selling manuals. I would rather not buy one if I'm not going to keep it.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon, never had a 354 but had its bigger brother 384. The glow plugs were activated by turning start switch to "ON" position and
then pushing and holding key in, wait for Glow Plug indicator to heat and continue to hold switch in and turn to "Start" position.

Re Foot Pedal at right heel: This is Diff Lock engagement lever. To free up take your favorite penetrating oil and spray around
the actuating shaft that goes through the brake drum. I believe there is a grease zerk on the foot pedal shaft. Becareful on a
tractor that old if the Diff Lock becomes engaged you may not get it to release and the tractor will not be steerable. Straight
line only unless one rear wheel can skid a bit.

Thanks, I thought that was the diff lock.

How do you turn on the PTO? I read something about 2 stage clutch?

Jon

Hi Jon,

Yes it should have a two stage clutch, half way down stops transmission, all the way to foot rest stops both trans and PTO.
PTO engagement lever should be at your left heel, a lever with knob on it that rearward is engaged. With the clutch all the way to
foot rest if PTO will not engage, DO NOT FORCE or you will shear the roll pin inside the diff. Turn engine OFF then try engaging
PTO. If it engages good with engine OFF then either the PTO clutch is seized to flywheel or clutch or pressure plate fingers
require adjustment.

That piece just slid out of the trans and looks to be missing the roll pin. If I take the shifter tower off, can I gain access? The PTO hydraulics have to come off?

To many projects!!!

Hi Jon,

See CaseIH.com parts:

https://partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html?csid=cd233ad629a57c4881ae834048b599bd&sl=EN&currency=#epc::mr52549ar1049487

The roll pin in item #4 that fits into groove into item #5 is the one that usually the one that shears off.

You can see there are two different styles, old version had all metal knob, newer versions had rubber knob.
The 3 cap screws should hold the engagement mechanism in place but if the roll pin in item #4 that goes thru shaft item #1
shears then the complete engagement mechanism will come out and the item #4 will have dropped down somewhere in the trans/diff
and I am uncertain if it can be fished out via removing item #3 or not.

See caseih.com: https://partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html?

I believe item #4 would drop into diff case and only access is removing hydraulic housing.

354 PTO Lever

Would lever #4 be able to attach to #1 and all slid through the hole as an assembly? I could just buy #4 with a roll pin and be all set.

Jon

Excellent help by the way!

Hi Jon,
Yes, if you remove the 3 cap screws the complete PTO engagement assembly can be removed/install thru the hole in the side of the
diff case. Yes buying item #4 would be an option. I would be concerned about the old one falling down and getting jammed into the
bull gears. I would drain that chamber of trans grease and look to see if you can find it and try fishing with a mechanic's magnet
tool.

Good luck fishing

(quoted from post at 19:16:15 05/06/18) the glow plugs work off the key switch if it has not been butchered

It doesn't push in. So I don't believe its working. I need to investigate a little more. The sun was out today, so I had other projects. Rains coming back and I will check it out. If the PTO doesnt work I'm going to sell it and keep looking. I have a newer Kubota and don't want to have to take the backhoe off every time I want to use the brush hog.

Any one have the Bosch part number for the newer glow plugs?

Thank you everyone for all the help!

Jon

Got all the parts out. #3 is broken in half?? I was able to slide the collar over the shaft and I cannot spit the pto by hand, which I assume is a good thing.

Any ideas why it would break? Going to TIG it back together with some silica bronze rod and maybe re enforce.

Any thing I should be careful when using the brush hog?

Jon

Hi Jon, never heard of #3 being broken before but anything is possible on a 40 + year old tractor.

Never used a brush hog only a fail mower that could throw many stones when you hit a ground hog hole.

Good luck

More questions. I've searched and still not sure what type of gear oil? 80? 90? Hydraulic trans fluid? Do all compartments level out and I fill to plug on left side of trans? Is the upper compartment under seat get the same oil, and what level? I do not have a pump on the front of the engine. Just on the right front.

Do the the bosch glow plugs just screw in? Can I use a starter relay and button?

Thanks again

Use SAE 90 weight oil in the transmission and final drive housings. Use Case IH HYTRAN for the hydraulic system located on top of the transmission.

I see there are 2 separate compartments.
