International 444 glow plug system

Hi all, i have international 444 (diesel) I have changed the old glow plugs as they weren't good only to have the dash relay coil burn out. Now trying to get it going again with new plugs and dash coil is resulting in it melting the resistor after 5 seconds of heat. Not sure if I have a crossed wire or bad plug. Any ideas would be helpful

Maybe someone will chime in here but there is a much improved conversion to a better plug type that you should do. Make sure you have a good enough rated switch (60 amps I believe) for that glow plug system. My 30A switch blew instantly.

Hi Sida before spend more $$ on a new glow plug resistor, check this link as this will work on your 444:

The IH 444 uses the exact same glow plugs as a Mercedes 190D car. There are complete "fast heat" glow plug upgrade kits sold now for the Mercedes that direct fit the IH B-275 and B-414(444 is newer model). No need for any adapters. Kit comes with four 12 volt plugs that get wired in parallel instead of series - and a controller.
Complete kit with four fast heat plugs, new wires, relay, controller, etc. is $144. Here's the parts list:

And you could also just buy four plugs for $15 each and figure out the rest yourself.



Re resistor burning out, you either have a short or shorted glow plug. Did you make sure to wire the glow plugs in series?

I did the conversion on my 364 and it is a totally different starting machine. 15 seconds hit the starter and it is running instantly. Got the 4 plugs from Rock Auto for just over $50. Used an old push button starter switch and made up my own wires. I have maybe $75 total in it. Best investment you can do on them.

Thanks for info. Can anyone confirm wires to resister?

I currently have 1 positive at 12v and 1 positive at about 3v both from ignition switch and live as key is turned on, they run to feed side of the resistor. Then on other terminal this is taken off to the plugs.

All plugs are wired in series as suggested. Appreciate the upgrade idea which I might convert too, unfortunately having just bought new plugs and a new resister I'm not wanting to spend even more unless I'm throwing good after bad if it's only a duff plug or my doggy wiring!
