International 454 questions

Well I was country cruising today and found an international 454 diesel. I've never been around one at all, owner was mowing with brush how 4 years ago and he said the engine seized up sith no warning at all was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions? I've never been around one of these 3 cylinder foreign diesels before and asking here to see if it's worth fixing? Antifreeze is full to top of radiator, oil is clean and where it should be on dipstick. I didn't have any tools with me to pull valve cover or starter out to investigate. I can buy it cheaper than scrap price so I'm hoping it's worth fixing? Thanks for any input at all.

If it is the engine and not the transmission(I guess it rolls ok?)I
would check into finding a donor engine. It is either a 154 or a 179,
I'm not sure. I would guess if it is the engine, it lost oil pressure,
and a donor engine would be cheaper than rebuild. Should be common.
On a side note where is this? Does he want to sell that Woods rotary
mower, if it is a 6ft ? Thanks, Mark.

We had a 454 with a gas engine that
grandaddy bought new. The engine in it
never held up for what we used it for with
it running 5-650 rpm all day during the
summer. Always wanted to put a diesel in
it but could never find one. We found a
local 464 with the D 179 diesel in it that
we replaced it with. It was a tough and
smart little tractor. Very handy. The
injection pump and fuel filter placement
is different on the one in the picture
than what we had which makes me wonder if
it is even a D 179 engine in this tractor.

On the whole the 454 was a good tractor with a few weak
points. They are the predecessor to the 74, 84, 85, 95 etc
series utility tractors. On that tractor the swept back front axle
was prone to issues but I believe most were caused by
loaders. Also the lightning shift tended to cause issues when
worn. None of them are show stoppers and if that tractor was
near me it would be in my yard already. Usually the D179 was
a great engine, I was talking to a local used parts yard who
has 3 and was commenting that he never sells one. I have
one of the newer variants of that tractor, a 485, and like it a
lot.

Hi that is a very early 454 with a D-179 with a CAV injection pump instead of the later Bosch VA pump. My Dad bought one in 1972 and my brother has it now and it is still running well with a few minor
hydraulic leaks and has well over 20,000 Hrs on it.
My brother also has the newer CIH 495, same tractor with D-179 Diesel but it has the newer Bosch VE pump. Both very good tractors.
Very unusable for the engine to seize, most common problem was coolant in the oil caused by leaking sleeve O-rings, also could have left it out without muffler covered and cylinder is full of water.
The other place to check is open the inspection plate under the clutch housing to see if the pressure plate fingers are all there.
Usually the parking brake doesn't work as an Operator drove it with the brake on.
As someone else said 454,464,484,485,495,3220 all same basic tractor with refinements over the years, last year of production was 1997. Engine made in Neuss Germany, rest of tractor made in Doncaster, UK,
some may have been crated and shipped the Louisville, KY, USA and final assembly there using parts common with the IH USA tractors like the 404 and 504.
