International 490 disc

Was looking at an international 490 disc. Were they good and are the parts available? At 24’ would a JD 4430 handle it? Thanks for any input.

They were a good disk for the job of tillage for a finer finish with a good level surface. As for heavy you want to find a Sunflower or a Landoll. Night and day difference if cutting heavy residue or hard ground. As for the 4430 it should depending on the depth and soil type. I pull a 24 foot Vibra shank with our 1466 once deeper to rip some dirt then again shallower to smooth it out for planting on. First time over in 4th low range second time in 1 high range Both about the same horse and size. Loots of people pulled 24 foot with 14and 1566's around here and 4430 4440's. We dig dirt loose from corn stubble and wheat stubble with the Sunflower we use. 29+ foot. 8 inch spacing and 24 inch discs on it. 7140 will pull it with a packer but slower than the Stieger .Of course there is about 150 HP difference too. Parts like spools I believe are the same on both the 470to the 496 along with the bearings are probably the same also. A 490 will unbolt down the middle for transport without permits if I remember right on that. So unbolt then set one side on with the other infront or behind it on a step or detach for hauling. Keep the wings folded before loading to keep the load legal.

I think it would be a load for a 4430. but I don't know how you would be using it. the unfolding hinge can be a wear item.

Thanks for the comments. I would be using it to follow a chisel plow so maybe it would work well to smooth and level the ground. Thanks again.

Good disk.

I have a 24 foot 490.

I pulled it with a dualed. 2 wheel drive TW20, and it took all of that. Hp was just enough, traction sometimes was a little low.

I bought planning ahead, as…

2 years later I got a NH 8970, and with 210hp and more so front wheel drive I can drive comfortably anywhere with it.
