International 574

I looked at a 574 today. It is the row crop version with the strait rear axle and front axle. It has good tires, is missing some sheet metal and has some other issues. I was wondering how tough these issues are to fix. My experience is with older models and the big frame tractors.

Problem #1 is no brakes. None at all even if you pump them. What is normally the problem and how much to fix.

Problem #2 is the pto will not turn off. Is this common and how hard to fix.

Problem #3 is a hydraulic leak where on of the hoses hook up to the steering cylinder. Is this a common problem.

I like the tractor and it runs really well. I just want to make sure that these problems are not really expensive or difficult to fix.

They are a great old tractor and the '74 series drive train was used with minor changes right up into the early Case models. The pto, steering and brakes all run off of the same fluid and internal pump. The brake band was a weak link as it wasn't strong enough to hold the engine when accidentally left on. This caused band material to be dumped into the hydraulic system and block things up.

First thing would be to check the hydraulic fluid level and consistency. I would then pull the hydraulic filter to see if there is a blockage there. If the fluid is full and clean and the filter looks good then I would start to be concerned about the internal pump mechanism. There are ways to test the pump pressure and I'm sure someone will advise of how to do that.

There are two brake master cylinders under the dash and bleeder valves for the brakes but it sounds like you are actually lacking pressure.

In this area finding good sheet metal is tough and I'm not aware of much from after market.

They are a good strong tractor but the price of one in good condition isn't too high so one like you describe would have to be pretty cheap. A good working 574 can be a handy little tractor.

Hi JW,
Problem #1: Brakes, fed by return hydraulic oil from oil cooler in front of engine. Older models did not have plastic master cylinder reservoir under the battery box behind the dash. The plastic reservoir is a major plus. There are 2 master cylinders again behind dash under battery box. From master cylinders brake lines run on top of transmission under the sheet metal under the seat and into brake master cylinders on each axle. Sometimes problems are no hydraulic oil supply to brake master cylinders, worn master cylinders, leaking brake line, usually can see signs of hydraulic oil running down side of trans/diff area , bad O-rings in the brake wheel cylinders, requires removing axles to replace. There is a brake bleeder screw on top of each rear axle.

Problem #2: PTO not shutting off, usually this is mechanical with the mechanism from the PTO lever to the actuating valve on the top of the MCV under the left foot rest and behind the hydraulic filter. Usually working PTO level back and forth and spraying mechanism with a good penetrating oil will solve the problem. Also look for junk that has fallen behind the seat that may interfere with PTO lever.
Problem #3: Is it the PS line that goes to the end of the PS ram or the end that goes onto the PS cylinder? Not common problem. More common problem is for PS steering pump to leak under the dash.

How many hours on engine? Should be D-239 German Diesel good for at least 15,000 Hrs if properly maintained. Check crankcase oil for being over full or smell like Diesel. Common problem with Bosch injection pump and low sulfur fuel is the front lip seal on pump drive shaft will leak Diesel into crankcase. Solution is to add Diesel fuel additive or a little 2 cycle engine oil to Diesel tank every time you fill up.

To check hydraulic pump, dead head the remote and listen for the relief valve buzzing.

As other post said weak point is park brake and operator driving with park brake on and chewing up park brake band into diff and hydraulic oil. So check park brake holding power. If this happened years ago and owner has changed the hydraulic filter regularly then all the bits will have been filtered out by now and no parking brake.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the input. The tractor shows 3600 hrs. It rens really well. It has the bosch pump and does not show any diesel in the crankcase oil. PTO sounds realativly easy to fix even if it is internal. I don't like the sounds of having to pull the axles to fix the brake cylinder though.

I am going to let it cool for a while to see if I can get the price down.
