International Cub

The rear seal on the cub engine is leaking. Can it be replaced by removing the clutch or do you have to remove pan etc.. I haven't got my service manual yet so I'm flying blind until I get one.
Thanks in Advance
Gary

Well, you have opened a can of worms. The seal itself can be pried out and changed without removing the retainer. The problem is that the retainer is often too large to hold the new seal. If the seal goes into the retainer easily it will not stay in or it will leak. Then the retainer has to be replaced or remachined. This will require the pan to be removed. I had that problem on my 47 Cub. A new retainer is available. I don't know what year the new retainer was used so can't say if one is needed or not. I can't remember if the oil pan had to come off. I was doing a complete over haul so it was off anyway.

Mine is a 1961 model. Does the comment that you can't get the correct size fit the 1961 model? On anther site some owners have used silicone so the seal would fit snug. Also someone out there will machine your retainer to accept an oversize one. Any additional ideas? Seems odd that you can't buy the correct one but I'm sure that has been thoroughly researched.

Before I knew of the problem I faced a loose seal. I farmer machined mine by hitting the inside of the retainer about 100 times with a dull center punch. A little JB weld and all was good.

My take was that there's a new 1 piece seal that's an improved design.

But, the carrier plate has to be remachined to accept the larger OD of the 1pc lip seal.

So its a "coordinated change" of both seal and carrier in order to get the upgrade.
